Anyone having trouble getting to their ROM 120?

Posted by misstea @misstea, 2 days ago

I am confuse my PT tells me that my ROM 112 is fine but my doctor wants me at 120. I have to the end of Sept. to get to 120ROM. My PT has had me for 24 sessions now so he is cutting me down from three sessions weekly to one session weekly. He gave exercises to do but I feel like he has given up on me. I am a hairstylist and I know I need my ROM to be higher. Now my PT is focusing more on my straights which is a 5 now and I need to get to 0. Will someone please give me some advice on how I can accelerate my exercise program to reach my goal before the end of Sept. 2025
Thanks,

Patience and gentle persistence?

Did you have knee replacement? Shoulder?

When was your surgery? (For hip replacement, I believe Range of motion increased after about six weeks, although precautions were still in place.)

Best wishes

I think one of the most helpful exercises for me was to stand at the bottom of stairs, put your foot on the 2nd step up, both arms forward on the steps above for balance, then really push into that knee bend, trying to touch the knee to the step above. (You can't for a while.) Your foot should be placed about halfway on the step. Bend to your point of extreme discomfort (not pain!) and hold there for 30 seconds. Try to relax it and make the leg go as limp as you can, for a bit further stretch each time. Do three reps at least two or three times a day, or as often as you think of it when going up and down stairs.
I don't think 120 is a magic number, some people due to continued swelling or excessive scar tissue may not never able to reach it, but it's good to not give up on home exercises too fast. In fact, stretching, bending, and stability exercises should never be considered "done" to keep the muscles around the knee healthy for years to come. Each knee surgery is different, my left knee has slightly less range of bend than my right knee -- same surgeon, same PT therapist, one year apart.
