Anyone have experienced Slurred Speech after Brain radiation?

Posted by bonzai1958 @bonzai1958, Mar 18 10:55am

I was found metastasis to brain 2.5 years after breast cancer treatments of surgery / chemo / radiation etc. In Jan. 2023 I experienced Brain / Cerebellum surgery and SRS radiation. All has been fine until six months ago I found having speech difficulty, known as Slurred Speech, which was caused by either Radiation Netcrosis or Tumor Recurrence. Have multiple MRI & special Brain PET, yet no definitive conclusion among my primary BC oncologist vs. Neuro-oncologist vs. radiation oncologist. I maybe asked to start Enhertu chemo as the Slurred Speech has lasted too long, which is slowly getting worst.

I'm so sorry you're experiencing symptoms related to your speech. If I understand correctly, your doctors have not come to a conclusion about cause or next steps? Are you receiving your care at a center of excellence or similar highly ranked cancer center? I would be tempted to seek a second opinion even if you have to travel as this is so critical to your current and future well being.

@tillymack Yes, my dictors are from Pearlman Cancer Center of Penn Medicine at Philly. I have also visited MSK and Weil Cornell Brain Tumor Center for 2nd opinions. The Brain PET scans supposely should differentiate Netcrosis vs. Ocurrence, yet the reports oncluded "indeterminant" at this moment. Thanks for your kind responses

It sounds like you have done an excellent job at seeking the best care possible. I wish you the very best as you move forward. I hope you're able to ask and receive answers to all your questions as well as to express your feelings and preferences.

@bonzai1958, have you worked with a speech language pathologist? I wonder if they may be able to help even without knowing the root cause of the slurred speech.
