Posted by applepie @applepie, Jan 25, 2025

My particular thing.... I feel anxious but ok when I wake. Then will peak along with depression mid morning, then Wayne off and will feel better.

Anyone dealt with a similar pattern and if so how did u manage it?

@applepie Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! While we wait for others to give us their experiences, let me give you some thoughts.

Are you taking any medications? If so, does the depression and anxiety coordinate with the timing of those? Do you exercise in the morning, gaining the dopamine effect that it can bring, and lowering your feeling of depression? Is there something in your daily schedule that you don't want to do/participate in, that makes you feel sad? I think there are several factors that you can look at, that might be causing what you are experiencing. Good for you for trying to understand what is going on.

Waking up with morning anxiety that is overwhelming. It a very uneasy feeling. I'm going to a therapist and not taking any medications at this time. I have tried anti anxiety medications in the past and they didn't help much. Cardiologist has me taking propranolol for the physical symptoms of anxiety but it does not work for the mind with anxiety thoughts. I'm 72. Loss of husband in 2022 and this started before that.

Hello. I just Googled your condition. AI lists many conditions that should be checked. Morning cortisol levels, thyroid hormones to rule out hyperthyroidism, and melatonin levels. I use Google AI and mayoclinic.org to do searches. Then I am informed when I go to my doctor. There have been, MANY TIMES I have helped find the answer to my condition. Twice, I have had to go to another doctor to get the correct diagnosis. And Twice I was initially told it was psychological. Both times, it was not! Wishing you a good diagnosis.

I have depression and anxiety - 2 sides of the same coin- and it took me awhile to find the right combination of meds but I’m doing so much better these days and I’m completely avoiding any benzodiazepines to cope with anxiety. Be very careful with the benzos as they can be very addictive. I also have some deep breathing exercises that quell the beginnings of any panic attacks that are very effective. I’ve experienced waking up in a panic- probably right out of a dream. That’s when a deep breathing session is so helpful. I encourage you to work with your doctor and consider antidepressants to stop the anxiety in the first place. Best wishes to you!

Are you in therapy. With an excellent therapist you might find the support and treatment you desire.

With mayoclinic.org, you first go to symptoms and signs, and see what comes up as possible diagnoses, and then go and read about those conditions. Then, ofcourse, go to a doctor. Many PCPs are ignorant of aspects of specialty conditions such as cardiology, endocrinology, neurology, and genetics, however, so sometimes you have to aggressively pursue a diagnosis. I have had to fight for a cardiologist, a geneticist, and an infectious disease doctor. They were the ones who gave me my diagnosis.

Yes I tend to because my dogs are ready for their daily run at the fairgrounds. I am a good housekeeper but get tired. There are a few dishes trash etc. I clean our bathroom every day. I walk 3000 steps daily. I think I get overwhelmed easily and in our world now it seems difficult to complete tasks. Something unplanned for with the bank deliveries etc taking time. I make am effort to calm myself.

Thank you Patti. Yes, depression and anxiety seem to go together for some people. I have tried Buspirone before for anxiety and considering going back on that. Do you mind me asking what antidepressant you were taking. Best wishes to you also Patti.

Yes I am going to a therapist and like her very much. Trying the breathing and mindfulness and just trying to work through the morning anxiety feelings.
