Anyone ever have a staphylococcus B infection in their groin?

Posted by billjudis @billjudis, Nov 3, 2023

Hello. I am a 77 year old male with chronic skin issues. I was diagnosed with eczema years ago. Now I have a staphylococcus Group B infection in my groin area that is not getting better. It has been about 3 months. I have been on 2 doses of Cephalexin with some reduction of the rash area but has not healed in the middle of the scrotum and is now an open wound about 3/4" long. This all started with a recurrent jock itch that morphed into this. Very painful with some burning. Any ideas, recommendations most appreciated!

Sounds like you need to see a dermatologists for the proper treatment. But in the mean time try treating with OTC washes etc.
Start by taking a good probiotic like Align
Use a good antibacterial soap such as Dial
Walmart sales a great product called Fungicure an antibacterial wash. It's fantastic!
After that you need a topical cream. That's where it's important to know the exact infection you are dealing with. Sounds like you need prescription grade cream but you can try different OTC ones like Lamisil or even try yeast cream.
Once it's cleared up a great powder to stay dry to keep it at bay is anti-monkey butt powder(rural king and Amazon sells it).
Hope this is helpful..Good luck!!

I agree you need to consult with a dermatologist.
The groin lesion needs to be to be cultured once again
to look for resistant staph. You may likely need another
antibiotic. Over the counter meds are not likely to help
without proper diagnosis. In addition a broad spectrum
cream that takes care of resistant bacteria may be necessary. Do not apply any topicals before you are seen
for reculture.

Thanks for the response! I have been seen by dermatology at least 2 or 3 times. I now have an appointment for this coming Wednesday with an MD to request being seen by a wound specialist, infectious disease specialist, etc. I do want to start on a good probiotic but also want to request a stool sample as well. These are great ideas..thank you!

Thanks for the response! I have been seen by dermatology 2-3 times already. I have Kaiser. Will be seeing another MD soon and will ask for a 2nd culture to check for resistant staph and possibly request to be seen by a wound specialist. Appreciate the help!

I hear you. I have had intertrigo since 1975. I use a cream with nystatin and a mild steroid as needed for years. I alternate between Nystatin and 3N1 antibiotic. I've tried ever type of boxer and brief made. I'm 76 yo male. I do sit a lot.

I let providers, not at Mayo, over-prescribe steroids for a few years and they almost ruined my skin. Hygiene is important. I did have a bad infection on pseudomonas that needed cipro for a week. I would 3n1 antibiotic cream on that open wound. I sleep w/o any pants. Good Luck.

Hi, 2 things. First, be very cautious using broad spectrum antibiotics like cipro, etc. I was attacked by a stray dog who took a huge chunk out of my arm a while back. I was given several broad spectrum antibiotics. The doctor told me that I "might want to take some good probiotics" which I did but he didn't say anything about the possibility of getting c-diff. Please look it up it's virtually everywhere and usually transmitted from your hands to your mouth. It's on grocery carts door knobs etc. The broad spectrum antibiotics do their job but they also kill off virtually every other gut bacteria except for the extremely resistant c-diff bacteria which then flourishes. I nearly died because I didn't connect the two things. The other thing is that I went to a wound care specialist because it was a huge hole in my arm. They told me to use manuka honey, sometimes known as medical grade honey. You can buy it in CVS from the pharmacy or on Amazon. She said to put it on the wound alternating with antibiotic ointment each time I changed the bandage. I thought she was crazy but I did it anyway and it healed incredibly fast with absolutely no scarring which is amazing to me. If the dermatologist can't help you, you might try going to see an epidemiologist. I truly hope this helps. Good luck
