Anyone else with Altered Taste All Day Long?
For the past several months I have had a problem with a terrible taste all day. I can taste food but as soon as I stop eating it goes back to either a sour or very unpleasant taste or an overwhelming salty taste. The dentist sees no issues, the medications and other products to increase saliva have done nothing, the GERD medication does nothing to help either so now I am on Gabapentin in case it's more of a neurological issue. This has helped reduce the amount of days when I have an overwhelming salty taste but has done nothing to reduce the constant sour and more tolerable salty tastes that I continue to experience all day long. Gum helps mask the taste but the only thing that really helps it is wearing my old orthodontic retainer. I have no idea why this helps but it immediately reduces the miserable taste, Of course this does not resolve the underlying issue. Is there anyone else experiencing this and have you found an answer????

@celia16 are you better now? I have been suffering from a bitter taste for 4 months and nothing is helping at all.

1 ReactionSo sorry to hear that you are having the same issues that I have had for almost two years. Things are a little bit better now since I started a medication that is two fold-it reduces anxiety and also calms nerves. My taste issues we think is a result of dry mouth and maybe some nerve issues. I still have problems with a bitter/sour taste often during the day but the salty taste I was experiencing often is now much less. Also I now have a day here and there where I have no bad taste at all which is such a relief but it doesn't happen often enough. Have you tried to hide the taste with gum, or mouth rinses? Does anyone say that you have a lack of saliva?
@jasmine98 , so sorry! I know what it’s like. It’s horrible! I started out super metallic, then moderate, then bitter, gradually mild bitter, then salty and now barely a hint of salt! Most days it’s so mild that I barely notice it. I’m so grateful!
Mine started September 2023! It’s been a long struggle. I have no idea why it has improved. No one could help me. I hope yours is short lived. Please post your journey! Good luck! At least know that improvement is possible! Have hope.
@jasmine98 , I’m sorry I can’t recommend any specific treatment. No doctor helped me. I suppose it was time. I eat a healthy diet and work out daily. I try to keep my blood sugar managed. I get labs to monitor my overall health……so, I have no idea what caused it and why it’s improved. Most doctors gave me no hope of improvement. I think this is because they suspect the olfactory nerves are damaged and they don’t think they can repair.
I was on gabapentine for only 3 weeks. I had to quit taking it because I felt buzzed the whole time I was on it. I was on a very low dose. At the end of the 3 weeks I developed a horrible nasty taste in my mouth. Food, water, and anything input in my mouth tastes terrible. I’ve basically quit eating, and force myself to drink Boost etc. I’ve been off the gabapentine for over a month and the nasty taste is still there. I have no ENT issues. Gum, mouthwash, breath mints are no help. I’m at my wits end with this and looking for help. Doctors have no advice. Help!!!

You might consider checking with your dentist if it doesn't go away soon.
Gabapentin has a short half-life so it should've been out of your system before now.

I am so sorry to hear about the taste issue you are having. Do you have a bad taste only when you are eating or drinking or is it there all day long. I have been experiencing a miserable taste for over 18 months but mine is not too bad when I eat but very bothersome the rest of the day. I still have it but it is just not as intense. I went to four specialists and no one had an answer but the rhematologist at least suggested a few things. I started out with gabapentin but it didn't help at all but it did not make things worse. I am now on the generic of Cymbalta which has taken the edge off. Luckily during the day gum, Biotene rinse, etc, do help but at night the only thing that works is a retainer. Do you have a problem with lack of saliva? Many taste issues are caused by Sjogren's.
