Anyone dealing with gout in the hands?

My husband has been diagnosed with gout in his hands. He is in PT and has seen a hand Dr. OT and surgery has been suggested. He hasn't had a gout attack, surprisingly. He has had it for about 4 years but is has gotten worse. Has anyone in this community had to deal with gout? If so, I would love to hear your experience and suggestions.

My mother has it bad, but mainly in her feet. She takes daily meds for it. A family friend used to have it in her fingers. She did have surgery for it, but I don’t recall the details. Sorry. I know it’s very painful from what I have seen in others.
