Hi, @clynnford ,
Having MAC and Breast Cancer is no picnic but can be manageable for sure
and you can get through it as I did by becoming engaged with your HC providers who will help you select the best strategies to manage your treatments. You do need to advocate for yourself as soon as a side effect appears that is uncomfortable so that it can be mitigated and understood.
I was diagnosed with Stage 1a IDC, Breast Cancer in 2/22 and 6/22
diagnosed with MAC. ( I was told 12 years before that I had early stage COPD and Bronchiectasis).
So decided to be treated for the breast cancer with surgery to remove the cancer from my left breast, chemo and radiation which was completed 12/22. It so happened that my medical oncologist and pulmonologist knew each other in medical school and worked on the med interactions so that I could safely begin taking the big 3 asap for the MAC.....along with completing all of my cancer treatments. I'm now cancer free and taking an Estrogen Blocker to increase the chances of no further cancer over the next 9 years. I still have MAC after more than 6 months on the Big 3 (Antibiotics) and perform other strategies such as airway clearance techniques, and I'm now going to take a new drug that has been FDA approved on a limited patient basis to help get rid of the MAC infection. I start this new med, Arikayce tomorrow.....and hoping for a good outcome although I'm told you can get MAC again and again. Oh well, best of luck to you and please continue to check in to this group which has been invaluable to me along with membership in a National Breast Cancer Support Group run by volunteers and associated with Mayo Clinic in Rochester, WI. If you have any questions at all, please contact me.
