Anybody have hypertension crisis what I call “attacks” now and then ?

Posted by jwillits8 @jwillits8, Aug 8, 2023

I’m 69 yr old and have been having hypertension crisis attacks with unknown/unsolved reasons. Drs focus on blood pressure meds and not the reason why I’m having them. The attacks leave me weak and unsteady a few days after. Being tested for any tumors in kidneys and hormones. Feels like something builds up in my system before these high blood pressure attacks.

I started having spikes in my blood pressure about 2 years ago. Requiring IV meds to bring it down. Turned out to be caused by autoimmune encephalitis. Started treatment for the encephalitis last year. Seems to have resolved. Very rare so doubt it’s the cause of yours. Just sharing.

@lasks Thank you for replying. My cardio doctor believes it’s something rare or unusual. I have not heard of autoimmune encephalitis.
What were the tests to find it?

@khali @jwillits8 Here is some information from the Mayo Clinic about encephalitis (also autoimmune encephalitis)

Do you think you could have encephalitis?

Mine affected my brain stem and cerebellum. People’s symptoms are different depending on which part of the brain is affected. Ataxia, nystagmus, BP issues, arrhythmia, dysphasia, dysmetria, fatigue, seizure, neurogenic bladder, central sleep apnea.

@khali In 2021 I thought I had a brain infection perhaps from bug bite as I walk in woods a lot. I had fever, had collapsed and then memory and problems walking, pounding heart rate-long story but docs didn’t check for that. I thought maybe I had lime disease.
What are tests for viral or autoimmune encephalitis?
Thanks

Have you seen a neurologist?

REPLY

@lasks I see a neurologist for Botox injections in neck as I have cervical Dystonia. I will mention it to him in October when I see him. I also sent a message to a doctor I’m seeing for this and mentioned the autoimmune encephalitis.
