Any suggestions to help with blood bruising on arms?

Posted by anne4u @anne4u, Jun 22, 2024

I’ve developed a pretty severe problem with blood bruises on my arms.
It started about 18 months ago and hasn’t stopped with diligent healing lotions, sunscreens, bruising creams, etc.
I recently saw a dermatologist who did a biopsy with negative results. He recommended continuing my regimen of lotion and sunscreen. I was disappointed he couldn’t help me more, but maybe there isn’t more he could do? A few months ago at an annual checkup I had comprehensive blood tests done and everything looks good. I’m not taking blood thinners or anything that would cause my capillaries to break so easily.
It’s so severe that I can tap my arm on something and it leaves a mark. My dog recently (accidentally) kicked her back legs off my upper arm and tore the top layers of skin off which left bad cuts and bruising from my forearm to my shoulder. I ended up at urgent care after it became infected and then 7 days on antibiotics. It’s healing but takes so long.
I’m dedicated to putting quality lotions and creams on my arms and I wear sunscreen when outside. I purchased sleeves to wear when outside working on my yard. I try to avoid the sun whenever I can.
I spent plenty of time in the sun growing up. I loved water sports and live close to the beach. But for the past 25 years my exposure has been limited. It seems this issue came on after I stopped taking pain medications and started using ibuprofen for pain. Recently, after reading that ibuprofen can thin the blood, I switched to acetaminophen. I haven’t seen any change yet.
Just last night I pushed a chair in at a dinner table and the top of my hand tapped the underside of the table, I now have a blood bruise across the top of my right hand. It seems like every day I have a new bruise.
I feel like my life is limited to avoiding the sun and hiding my beat up arms! Summer is here and I’d love nothing more than to be able to go outside in short sleeves and enjoy the day without getting stares at my horribly bruised arms! I know this is common with old age. I’m 65 and feel like I’m too young for the severity of bruising.

Is there anything that has helped anyone with this issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

@gloriarubac I ordered Helichrysum on the internet. I ordered a small bottle with a roll-on top, which I find less messy and easier to apply than drops of oils. I hope it's OK with the Moderator if I mention that I ordered mine from Vitality Extracts, which specializes in Aryuvedic remedies but it may be available from other sources, as well.

Vitamin K and C.........spinach, oranges, etc

Hi, I'm having same problem, including a dog scratch infection 😢. Told by my GP & Dermatologist that since I have a very fair complexion and am 78 it's common to now have very thin skin. I was previously put on baby asprin due to stroke issues and told to stop asprin as well as fish oil. I don't take fish oil but due eat mostly fish so I've cut back. I wear long sleeves and garden gloves around dogs. Maybe wearing the arm protectors during the day will help.

@pejeffrey1947 I use arm protectors and they do help. I found several on Amazon and have a thick pair that I use when working in the yard. My dog is pretty active, especially when I come home she jumps up so it’s been a challenge to keep her at bay! I grab her front paws and direct them away, along with trying to keep her from jumping in the first place! I get steroid injections in my lower back each month. I noticed after missing an injection my arms started clearing up. I went the middle of November for an injection and by the time I went back in January (this month) my arms were looking pretty good. So if the injections are contributing to my skin issues, do I discontinue my injections or continue with my beat up arms? That is the question I’m considering now! All the best to you finding what helps!

@anne4u I appreciate your comments. I get steroid shots in my shoulder Never linked that with the bruising. But Id rather have less pain than a bruise. Like a car with a lot of miles. A nick on the fender compared to a flat tire

I've had various purple spots and bruises show up after bumping into things, carrying bags using my wrists and basically doing absolutely nothing to cause them. It seems like if the wind blows against my skin, I bruise. It started getting worse in 2021. I did have the COVID-19 Vaccine series in 2021 (required by my job) and got infected with COVID-19 in November 2022. I don't know if there is a connection but the Hematologist I saw in September 2024, for my Iron Deficiency Anemia, asked me if I had the COVID 19 Vaccine. She never explained or elaborated on why she asked the question.

Anyway, I was dealing with chronic lower extremity leg ulcers at that point along with extreme fatigue, arthritis pain, unexplained weight loss of 37 pounds and the echymosis/purpura/petechiae. She told me it was "Senile Purpura" due to me having very thin skin because of aging. Like many of you, I don't think that truly explains what is going on. As bad and ugly as it was at that point in time, it's 100 times worse now. I was diagnosed with Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis at that point - via punch biopsy by a Dermatologist. I started seeing a Rheumatologist in July 2024 also. As of today, I still do not have a diagnosis. My leg ulcers cleared up in July 2025 after a Podiatrist at my Wound Care Clinic put me on a 5 week course of Prednisone. My Rheumatologist kept me on a maintenance dose of 5 mg daily starting in August 2025. My Echymosis seems to have really gotten worse over the past 3-4 months. I believe the Prednisone is contributing but also wonder if the winter weather and constant wearing of long pants, long sleeve shirts, extra blankets, dry heat and less activity has been a factor because now it is all over the front and back of both legs, both arms, my chest and occasionally - spots on my face. I look hideous. I've tried creams and concealers but they don't help much. I saw a new Vascular Doctor yesterday. Her intake RN took pictures of my arms and legs and the doctor wrote "Covered in Echymosis" in my clinical record. It's so ugly and embarrassing. My doctor says it's largely due to my medications but said it may not resolve once I'm totally tapered off the Prednisone; I'm tapering now and I'm exhausted. It's heartbreaking for me. I was always fiercely independent and self sufficient. I raised both of my kids myself, took care of my house and yard, worked full time, looked good and healthy / then / everything changed. The person I was transitioned into a skeleton with purple marks and spots, and bruises everywhere - and no solid explanation for any of it. The changes happened very quickly after my Spinal Fusion Surgery in March 2021. I thought my Surgeon was a Genius but he turned out to be a very greedy AHole. I think something went wrong with the surgery but I will never know. So I'm stuck being sick, ugly with spots, skinny, fragile exhausted, and sad. If anybody has any information on treatments that can help, please share.

Thank you for listening.

@mlocke67
I am reading your post as i get the funky bruises on my arms. I remember my mom having them, but she had no real answer and never, ever spoke of any medical issues she had. I had breast cancer in 2021. 13 rounds of chemo. I think I have regularly had those marks since then. They lessened after the treatment ended but started again withing the year when i was diagnosed with MDS. My sister has them too and she had rheumatoid arthritis.
She took prednisone. She got off it. I have heard over the years side effects people have had with that drug. I would get an appointment with the last medical person who listened. Seek out a counselor to get yourself right side and feeling good about you so you can walk through this life health mess.
Your body has been through a bunch of traumas since 2021. Craziness. Doctors are not always right either. The whole thing with your skin could begin clearing up when you stop a medication or too. I hope some more people post who give you links to help. It nearly always happens.

I was told by my dermatologist that nothing can be done except cream on your arms. DerMend and Cetaphil were the two she recommended. She told me this is an inherited condition that happens to some of us as we age.
When I talked to my doctor she recommended Vital Proteins Collagen Powder because she has the condition. My Psychiatrist has the same condition, she told me to take 2000 mg of Vitamin C with Bioflavonoid Complex and Rose Hips. I am doing all of these recommendations. My psychiatrist said the University of Miami did a study and the Vitamin C worked in 50% of the cases. I still have to be careful, but it is slightly better.

This started when I came under extreme financial, medical, and emotional pressure. However, I am 68 and I might have developed the condition at this time just because of my age.

I am grateful to be this age. So, I guess it's just another thing to deal with, like wrinkles. 🙂

My heart goes out to you as I read these posts on bruising and bleeding. My husband has this now. He’s a strong, muscular man, but his skin rips open with any touch of a wall, drawer. Brush against the car…then he bleed and then month long bruising. His arms are covered right now.
His hematologist suspected he had a platelet issue. He makes enough platelets, but they work very slowly. Not many labs do the test, so he sent him to UNiv. Of NC lab for it. Yes, he has platelet disorder. He will require a platelet transfusion prior AND after any surgery. He was given a drug to take only when it’s really bad. Dermend and Vitamin C were also recommended. I asked “if he was Clint Eastwwod with unlimited funds, could something be done?” Yes, there are doctors in NY that use a laser the takes it away. Just FYI. Best of luck to you.
