Any suggestions to help with blood bruising on arms?

Posted by anne4u @anne4u, Jun 22, 2024

I’ve developed a pretty severe problem with blood bruises on my arms.
It started about 18 months ago and hasn’t stopped with diligent healing lotions, sunscreens, bruising creams, etc.
I recently saw a dermatologist who did a biopsy with negative results. He recommended continuing my regimen of lotion and sunscreen. I was disappointed he couldn’t help me more, but maybe there isn’t more he could do? A few months ago at an annual checkup I had comprehensive blood tests done and everything looks good. I’m not taking blood thinners or anything that would cause my capillaries to break so easily.
It’s so severe that I can tap my arm on something and it leaves a mark. My dog recently (accidentally) kicked her back legs off my upper arm and tore the top layers of skin off which left bad cuts and bruising from my forearm to my shoulder. I ended up at urgent care after it became infected and then 7 days on antibiotics. It’s healing but takes so long.
I’m dedicated to putting quality lotions and creams on my arms and I wear sunscreen when outside. I purchased sleeves to wear when outside working on my yard. I try to avoid the sun whenever I can.
I spent plenty of time in the sun growing up. I loved water sports and live close to the beach. But for the past 25 years my exposure has been limited. It seems this issue came on after I stopped taking pain medications and started using ibuprofen for pain. Recently, after reading that ibuprofen can thin the blood, I switched to acetaminophen. I haven’t seen any change yet.
Just last night I pushed a chair in at a dinner table and the top of my hand tapped the underside of the table, I now have a blood bruise across the top of my right hand. It seems like every day I have a new bruise.
I feel like my life is limited to avoiding the sun and hiding my beat up arms! Summer is here and I’d love nothing more than to be able to go outside in short sleeves and enjoy the day without getting stares at my horribly bruised arms! I know this is common with old age. I’m 65 and feel like I’m too young for the severity of bruising.

Is there anything that has helped anyone with this issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I’m almost 75 years old. However, I’ve noticed that my skin bruises on my arms too easily. It starts with little bug bites that itch until I have big bruises on my arms. It looks terrible. About 5 years ago the hydrotherapy therapist put heat packs on my back that caused burns all over my back. My rehab doctor was very upset over this. My point in this is that as we age, our skin becomes thinner. Hot showers are not good for thin skin. Also, this might sound terrible, but according to some YouTube videos for senior citizens, they say try doing sponge baths instead of taking a shower every night. Also ask your doctor if you have a Vitamin D3 deficiency or Vitamin K deficiency.
Good luck to you.

Do you use bhrt?

I swear by DuLac Arnica Gel 98%. With bad bruises, I apply it in the morning and evening. It only takes a few minutes to dry.

No, no blood thinners. My dad had this same skin condition. So not surprising that I do too.
It just looks creepy!!

I bruise very easily also. Am oldish, 84, and not on any blood thinners. Some of my supplements are thinning blood already, so my doc said when I asked about him about taking a baby Aspirin. I remember one of them was fish oil, but there could have been others also.
My daughter told me to immediately put an icepack on the bruise, that keeps the blood from spreading under the skin. I do when I can, and it helps.
When I visit my kids and play with their puppies, I always put on a long sleeved heavy blouse, but the last time one dog tore off a peace of skin on my wrist anyway. It did take a long time to heal, and a red spot remains. I used Neosporin and a bandage to not get an infection and keep blood off the sheets at night.
Have learned to always have a small tube of makeup with me, just to make those ugly spots less visible, otherwise I just live with it.
I wished I could be of more help. Sorry.

Im 76 and have experienced this issue for at least the past 10 years. I have consulted with several dermatologists about it and even tried some laser procedure on both arms and legs to get rid of all the after effects of bruising. Nothing has worked yet. I am 110 lbs and not too thin, but just little fat under the skin on lower legs and arms, which helped cushion those areas from bruising in my earlier years. So my remedy is to focus on finding joy in other areas of my life. And that works better than anything else I have tried!

Question. If you are on bhrt do you continue to have this issue? I am 77 and I no longer have them after starting bhrt at 76.

I have seen many people mention “bhrt”. I have never heard of this before, so would appreciate it if someone would explain to me what “bhrt” means. I too have crazy bruising & outright severe bleeding sometimes with not much of a reason for it. I am on aspirin (was on 325 but it was so bad I had to reduce it to 162) but still severe bruising & bleeding.

It’s ok! I just deal with it too! And wear long sleeves but they don’t help much.

Bhrt is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. I started it last year and have been wondering if anyone else had experienced a decrease in this bruising (senile purpura) after starting bhrt.
