Any experience with urothelial with squamous kidney cancer

Posted by 177 @177, Mar 30 11:29am

I've been diagnosed with rare kidney cancer. Urothelial carcinoma with predominant (80%) squamous differentiation of my kidney. Kidney was removed last week. Stage is T3. Doctor said its likely to return but no treatment works. Just have to wait 3 months for scan. If found then, no treatment likely to work then either.

I've also seen this called Transitional Cell Carcinoma.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there nothing to try now that might keep the cancer from growing or returning?

@177, any update? How did the appointment with the urologist go?

Had the appt with oncologist April 1. He gave us a glimmer of hope. Because my type of cancer is rare and stage 3 he is figuring out which treatment to try. But at least he'd try a treatment. He's waiting for me to heal from surgery and will do labs and CT end of April. He's consulted with 2 Oncologists at Mayo and some others tomorrow. He is well respected and skilled. I have confidence in him. I did reach out to MD Anderson only because I'm wondering if their center might have a potentially successful treatment not offered here.

Thank you very much. I will follow up with the others you have listed.

I am doing fine surgery. Just healing. I also had a non-cancerous ovarian tumor removed. Which is how my kidney cancer was detected.

My Urologist offered no treatment. I am meeting with a local oncologist tomorrow after a relative reached out to him for me. I believe my Urologist to be a very competent doctor. He used to work at Mayo and said he had reached out to colleagues and mentor. I guess I just haven't been ready to give up hope. I will certainly see about immunotherapy or clinical trials.

At the beginning of November '24 I was diagnosed with T3 aggressive high-grade Urothelial Carcinoma with Squamous Cell differentiation bladder cancer, which was re-analyzed as Pure Squamous Cell Carcinoma. I was not able to try Chemo or radiation because they don't work on Squamous so on February 19th I had a radical cystectomy and now have a neobladder. I start immunotherapy on April 3rd as that is all that can be done to try and stop new cancer cells from forming.

Thank you Tanya. I will see about immunotherapy. It wasn't offered to me. Best of luck to you with your upcoming treatment.

Like @hmmm (Tanya) said, for some people immunotherapy may be an option. Have you considered asking about available clinical trials? How is your recovery going after surgery?
