Any experience seeing a clinical fellow vs a staff physician?

Hi all,

I am bringing my daughter, who is a neurodiverse young adult with epilepsy having severe seizure episodes after being seizure free for a few years, to Mayo- Rochester from out of state. It is quite an investment for us to do this. We have been scheduled with a fellow rather than a staff physician, and I am wondering if that makes a difference in terms of their level of experience etc. to being able to help her. She was a preemie and has a very complex medical and seizure history. Does anyone else have experience working with a clinical fellow in this situation that can share how that worked out. Thank you in advance!

@vidya2

They recommended an EMU stay for 5 days with a medication taper. We are going in tomorrow morning. Thank you for all the hugs and support.

The EMU (and Mayo) were game changers for us. We are still paying it off but it was so worth it. Our son had a sudden onset at 17 and was having seizures weekly. When we got him into mayo Phoenix they put him in EMU and took him off all meds; were able to see what med would work for him and when we left 5 days later, he was loaded up on the correct dosage. We had 2 episodes after so they upped his meds a bit and today he is 8 mos and 16 days seizure free and living in a dorm at ASU. We still worry as he has to manage his meds on his own but luckily he is 20 minutes from Mayo and 45 minutes from us.
Good luck! I hope your experience is good as well.

Thank you for sharing this. My daughter had a pretty complete seizure episode on Day 1 and they captured it and we got to wrap up in 3 days instead of 5. It was a difficult day, but we were fortunate that we captured it and have a better understanding now than before. The team who took care of her was excellent - attentive and kind, and connected well with my daughter. I feel like we have a more complete picture of her epilepsy and clear next steps on prevention and rescue plans. Thank you all for your support through this journey.
