Anti inflammatory supplements

Posted by plfr @plfr, 1 day ago

I am a kidney transplant patient x 10 years for APKD. Always normal renal function post transplant on Tacrolimus. Very active swimmer on a team but with chronic radiculopathy status post two lumbar surgeries. I would benefit greatly from an anti inflammatory regimen maybe supplements. But the dogma from the transplant team is to tell every post transplant patient to avoid essentially all herbal supplements. Forgetting that transplant patients are not all the same and that we have other issues and interests
Anyone with pragmatic advise on anti inflammatory supplements safe to take with Tacrolimus
Thanks

I was told by my team I could take bromelain (pineapple extract). Check with your team if it is ok for you. I was getting inflammation and pain in my knees. I originally tried turmeric, but found out that it improves your immunity (not what we want). Then I switched over to bromelain. For the most part it has helped me.

As per Webmd.com, Bromelain causes the body to make substances that fight pain and swelling. Bromelain also contains chemicals that seem to interfere with tumor cells and slow blood clotting. People use bromelain for muscle soreness, pain, burns, kidney stones, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses. Bromelain might cause some side effects, including diarrhea and stomach upset.

Per Dr. Axe, the benefits of Bromelain include:
1. May help prevent cancer
2. Helps treat digestive disorders: inflammatory bowl disease, ulcerative colitis, dyspepsia (peptic ulcers), colon cancer, constipation, Crohn's disease, heartburn and diarrhea.
3. Supports faster recovery from surgery & injuries
4. Fights allergies and asthma
5. Helps fight or prevent sinus infections
6. Helps decrease joint pain
7. May support weight loss

You can get bromelain by eating pineapple (especially the core), juicing pineapples (particularly the core), or supplements.
