Has anyone tried anti-depressant medication for neuropathic pain?

Posted by greenacres @greenacres, Nov 13, 2021

I'm wondering how many people in this community with neuropathic pain have been prescribed some form of an anti-depressant along with or without Gabapentin to help ease the pain and if anyone has found this protocol helpful?

I’m taking Duloxetine with Gabapenten….and I think it eases the burning in my lower legs. I have small fiber neuropathy

I took 10mg nortriptyline for awhile for pain management (spinal issues), and in the process of taking it I found that taking it did provide some relief for my PN numbness (toes), and I slept well too. However, the minor sedation effect upon waking was not working out, so I tapered off the nortriptyline. I tried Gapapentin once after my PN diagnosis but it did not relieve my PN numbness so I stopped taking it. A 500 mg acetaminophen tab at bedtime does help me sleep, as does wearing warm thick socks. So far, I've found no lasting relief for my PN numbness but I'm scheduled to see a new neurologist soon for a discussion, so my search continues.

This is from a caretaker for a peripheral pilyneuropathy patient who takes citaloprin and lisinopril. He falls asleep at the drop of a hat after working 4-5 hours max

I tried several of those way earlier before my diagnosis and my body didn't respond well to them at all. I was recently prescribed one new one (I still take Gabapentin), but I have not taken it yet because I remember my Mom taking it a long time ago and having very adverse effects. BUT...I know that each individual responds differently to medication combinations, so I'd say all you can do is research it and maybe try, then make a decision on how to proceed. Hope that helps. Good luck to you

I’m new to the group so not sure how I see what your post was responding to regarding meds with gabapentin. I’m Mom of a poly neuropathy patient. Thanks for your help

Amitriptyline and Lyrica work well for me to control pain. Both agree with me and the only side effect is occasional dry mouth. I hope you can find the right combination for you.

@lougentez3. I am wondering the same thing. Does Mayo have any recommendations for treatment of SFN. My neurologist said to try Cymbalta and use lidocaine cream I have for another condition. So exhausted from PAIN and allergic to Gabepentin.
