Has anyone tried anti-depressant medication for neuropathic pain?

Posted by greenacres @greenacres, Nov 13, 2021

I'm wondering how many people in this community with neuropathic pain have been prescribed some form of an anti-depressant along with or without Gabapentin to help ease the pain and if anyone has found this protocol helpful?

Hi, All -
I have tried gabapentin and Cymbalta and had negative reactions. Has anyone tried Lyrica for nerve pain?
Your feedback as always is appreciated.

I found I couldn't function on Lyrica and it wasn't giving me an noticeable relief from the nerv pain. I felt "bombed" on it and decided I couldn't live the rest of my feeling like that.

My neurologist has me on Nortripyline at night. It has helped my pain and helps me sleep.

The medication you describe is working on your brain, not your neuropathy. It dumbs down the brain so you think you feel better.

I started duloxetine six weeks ago. No sustantial difference in neuropathy pain I experience in my feet and legs, however, it definitely has made me have a better attitude. I was so depressed from a triple nerve surgery failure, I didn’t know who I was anymore. This antidepressant has helped me to come back to the real me. Fortunately, I have no side effects from it like I did with Gabapentin and Pregabalin . I could not take those - I was so lethargic , no motivation and depressed. The duloxetine has been helpful for me.

My Neuro prescribed Endep 30 mg for SFN along with Lyrica. The Endep was too strong and was reduced to 10 mg so I didn’t sleep all day. It gave me much better balance and I was able to leave the walking stick at home. So I think it is used for balance improvement and commonly prescribed. Endep has been around for a long time and used for many conditions

I’m on Nortriptyline and it is an antidepressant as well. I went off all my meds which included Lyrica and found the pins and needles and numbness increased ten fold. I am back on it again and the pins and needles are slowly subsiding. I don’t care what it’s working on as long as it’s working!

@reesa another drug you might consider is buprenorphine as a patch. I’ve been using it for about 3 years and provides 24/7 pain relief. I’ve attached some info for you.
