Ankle Pain

Posted by lucynn @lucynn, Feb 27, 2022

I feel the worst when I go to bed. Lately, my ankles hurt. They feel like they are really heavy. Like someone has their hands wrapped around them. It's not pain as much as discomfort. It doesn't affect my walking or balance. Does anyone else have this symptom?

Hello @lucynn, Welcome to Connect. I sometimes have a little pain in my ankles but think mine is just due to my age and some arthritis. I'm pretty sure you are not alone though and hopefully other members will share their experience and what they have found helps. Here is some information I found on the topic.

"Why does my ankle hurt and feel heavy?
The most common causes include injury, arthritis and normal wear and tear. Depending on the cause, you may feel pain or stiffness anywhere around the ankle. Your ankle may also swell, and you may not be able to put any weight on it. Usually, ankle pain gets better with rest, ice and over-the-counter pain medications." --- Ankle Pain: Common Causes & At-Home Remedies: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/symptoms/15295-ankle-pain

It's good that it doesn't affect your walking or balance. How long have you had the pain, did it just recently start?

I have stiffness, not really pain, in my ankles. It doesn't affect my walking either but it's uncomfortable and constant. I do have balance issues. I have done some physical therapy to try to loosen it up. Not sure how much it helps, but I have to admit to not keeping up with exercises consistently.
Truthfully my whole foot seems stiff - feels somewhat like you described - something constricting around my midfoot. I have talked to neurologists and podiatrists and haven't figured out anything for it. Just part of neuropathy?

I have had the ankle problem for around 2 months now. My regular doctor said he believes I have RA. I have an appointment to see a rheumatologist on March 16. I hope she can help me. I also have peripheral neuropathy but the ankle pain feels different from the neuropathy pain. Thank y0u for taking the times to respond to my question.
