Have you had an Ambulatory EEG?

Posted by lsittll @lsittll, Feb 21, 2022

My neurologist has ordered an ambulatory EEG for three days. This is something I have never heard of or known exists. From the information about the procedure online it looks like a helmet is worn throughout the day. It appears as though it is very uncomfortable to wear during the night. When I wear something uncomfortable or bothersome like a CPAP mask over my face I automatically pull it off my face at night. Because I have nocturnal seizures it is important I keep it on my head at night. I don't know how I'd keep a helmet on my head!

If anyone has had this procedure, or knows anything about it I would appreciate their input so I can be prepared what to expect.

Hello @lsittll. I can understand your concern for this diagnostic procedure and why you would want to connect with others who have some additional experience and/or knowledge about it. I believe that @jakedduck1 has shared information on Ambulatory EEGs in previous discussions. As well, members @mboulis and @sdneb44 have also both shared their experience, albeit some time ago, in other discussions and may come back to share more with you.

Have you shared your concerns for when you are sleeping with the helmet on with your Neurologist to see if he/she has any particular advice? When is this scheduled for?

Hello @amandajro !

Thank you for responding to my post. The EEG is scheduled for March 12 to 15. Yesterday my psychiatric nurse practitioner said she never heard anyone say anything to the extent that the procedure is uncomfortable. I would like to know what website is most informative about the ambulatory EEG. There may be other more up-to-date websites than the one I read.

I have not shared any of my concerns about sleeping with the helmet with my neurologist.

Hello @amandajaro!

I am having the ambulatory EEG now until Thursday. Much different than the hard hat football helmet I saw online. It must have been an ad or cartoon. There are sires like a normal EEG all over my scalp and I carry the electrodes in a bag on my shoulder, I don't know how I'll get cress and undress and sleep and do some other activities with that thing on my shoulder.
I have electrodes on my forehead. I don't feel comfortable being seen that way. to think the EEG techs would hae me walk out of the hospital with my head exposed with all of these wires all over it.
