Air travel to see a Mayo Clinic physician?

Posted by bryanbay @bryanbay, Sep 18, 2023

I'm on the west coast and in 2018 was diagnosed, by a neurologist, with idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. The condition has greatly impacted most aspects of my life and this year I began seeing a clinical psychotherapist to help me with depression. She recommends that I make plans to visit a Mayo Clinic location, maybe in Minnesota, to see a professional there. I'm wondering if anyone here has thoughts, they'd be willing to share regarding the practicality of a traveling medical visit because I'm unsure if it makes sense to see a Mayo Clinic physician who lives a plane flight away. Are there do's and don'ts that should be considered? and could they be shared here?

Just an FYI the Mayo Clinic has a department where you can get discounted airline appointments.
If booked through the Mayo Clinic airline charges might be different. I know AA had a contract with them but it has to be booked through the Mayo Clinic.

That’s good to know. So, would you call Mayo or AA, or any of the other airlines? Or just Mayo, itself?

Call Mayo Clinic. AA can’t book the reservation.

I have the same diagnosis and I am leaving next week to fly to Loma Linda to their neuropathy center. I have spoken to past patients of theirs and I am hopeful that I will have a positive result. I just turned 70 and have been experiencing numbness in bottom of big toes and along the ankle area. I am healthy, no diabetes, a runner and I also teach exercise classes. No back issues so nothing shows up as to what is causing these symptoms. I want to share with all of you what happens while I'm there. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post my up coming experience, so if anyone has a suggestion, please comment.
Thank you.

Hi @janetlee23, You might want to share your experiences with the Loma Linda neuropathy center in this discussion:

There’s a service provided by volunteer pilots who fly patients to medical centers. It is particularly for those who cannot afford or are too ill or disabled to fly commercially. It’s usually available on a limited basis, but if that applies to you, might be worth looking into. It’s called Angel Flights. Used a lot for cancer patients but I think they help others as well.

Thanks so much for tour information. I had no idea anything like this existed, and might come in handy when get an appointment. Their best guess is sometime in December 😢.
