After diagnosis of Hurthle Cell; anyone with cancer in lymph nodes?

Posted by koh @koh, Mar 27, 2023

Following surgery and diagnosis of Hurthle cell Carcinoma, has anyone later developed cancer in lymph nodes? If so, how long after surgery? How did they find it? When I mention concerning issue of pain in my neck, doctors say it’s not thyroid cancer, but since I was told I didn’t have cancer for 10 years and ended up with HCC, I don’t know if I should ask for specific tests. Thank you!

I was told after 2 surgeries (partial, then total thyroidectomy) that it was totally contained, no lymph node involvement and I would be fine, even though it turned out to be tall cell papillary. A month or 2 later, getting ready for RAI I had a chest cat scan- which showed nodules in the lungs- most likely lung metastases. I plan on asking my new cancer center to do a whole body scan or PET scan to make sure there isn t even more spread. I know tests involve radiation, but sometimes it is worth it. I'm sorry you re going through this...and wish you the best...

Thank you! I keep reading about cancer after the removal of the thyroid and I want to make sure I pay attention to any issues that might indicate a possible new issue. Ten years of “ monitoring” where other tests were never ordered and then getting diagnosed with HCC has made me more concerned with issues that the doctor feel is not cancer.
