Altered Color Perception

Posted by julianned @julianned, Jun 25, 2019

Aside from my abnormal sputum production and torso pain (which I posted about in other groups), a new issue with my vision has developed in the past several days where, when I wake up things are the wrong color (white pillows are neon blue and green, or the ceiling neon yellow) and it lasts 1 or 2 seconds and then the pigmentation shifts to normal -- bizarre. It has happened the past 4 mornings and also when I open my eyes after lying down in acupuncture. The shapes and clarity of objects are fine, but the color off. Has anyone heard or experienced this? Today I saw an ophthalmologist who examined me and said that structurally everything looked good.

Hi @julianned, I have not heard of altered color vision before. Looking at this article on Mayo Clinic (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/poor-color-vision/symptoms-causes/syc-20354988), it states that causes may be
- Certain medications. Some medications can alter color vision, such as some drugs that treat heart problems, high blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, infections, nervous disorders and psychological problems.
- Aging. Your ability to see colors deteriorates slowly as you age.
- Chemicals. Exposure to some chemicals in the workplace, such as carbon disulfide and fertilizers, may cause loss of color vision.

Have you had a change in medications or exposure to chemicals?

Unfortunately the temporary break from this issue did not last! I have been experiencing it. Very bizarre.

Has anyone figured out the cause? I had a critical illness in November 2022. During the illness I suffered a cardiac arrest. When I woke up from my induced coma and was somewhat alert I found out they added two medications metoprolol and hydralazine. I didn't come home from hospital until December 2022. In January I started seeing bright neon/florescent colors. Like described above, after a nap say a white pillowcase is now bright green. Objects have also shown up closer to me than they really are. I reached out to my ophthalmologist she had me reach out to neuro. My neurologist had me see a neuro ophthalmologist. My appointment was yesterday, he has no idea what the cause is. He is going to research the newer medications and let me know if this could be a side effect.

I also have this. I take a short nap and when I open my eyes my living room, mainly my furniture is a different color only for a few seconds and sometimes the whole room will be green.

Has this subsided?

Hi, this sounds similar to my situation. Upon waking, I also have varying colors - including orange, lime green, yellow and pink hues. Additionally, I have black lines across my vision that change from coiled to straight to river-like anytime my eyes have been closed for more than 2 or 3 minutes. They fade and disappear within 3-5 seconds. I have had repeated checks with an ophthamologist, the last time was 4 weeks ago. My depth perception is also altered at times, and things are farther away than they appear to me. Again - this is upon waking in the morning. I want to mention that I have had 4 serious deer tick bites in the past 3 years, and that this started after the second one. Finally, I have been referred to Stanford Neurology - and am hopeful that they can find the issue. My MRI's of my brain also show lesions similar to MS lesions and I have mild enlargement of my ventricles.

Im having the same issues and my brain MRI also show lesions. Did Stanford have a cause?

I just researched Metoprolol. I take it too. One of the side effects is disturbed color perception.

Hi, I'm 32 years old, female, not taking any medication. This happened to me too, already several days. It started around 3 weeks ago. I've seen 2 days in a row everything in green color when opening my eyes upon waking up, for almost a minute, the second day I even saw light in stroboscopic effect. I also saw black lines in the dark. Then over the next weeks I saw yellow when opening my eyes. It's been 3 times already. I know all of this started after painting with oils. It just doesn't make sense because it's not the first time I paint with them, I've been paiting on and off for years, but maybe this time I accidentally got a bit inside of my mouth because I was painting with long nails and then later I bit them. Idk. I'll try to check for toxicology. I've checked my eyes and they are fine.

@julianned - that is unfortunate that the temporary break from the altered perception of colors in your vision didn't last and you are experiencing it again.

I'd like to invite into this discussion for any thoughts a couple of members who've mentioned color or other relevant changes in their eyesight, @phayslip @meningone. @rosemarya @jenniferhunter also may have some thoughts for you.

How were things this morning with your vision when you woke up, julianned?

Yesterday I was sitting closing my eyes outside. When I opened them the trees and grass were suddenly the richest hue of green I've ever seen and certain bricks and slabs within the pattern of the brick patio I was on were a beautiful medium blue I couldnt believe I had not noticed before. Then I closed my eyes again (waiting for someone) and the trees and bricks changed to the drab green and drab grey, respectively, that are their real colors. This happened twice sitting there yesterday. I'm a 53yo female with myopia and astigmatism but no other current conditions and no medications. I'm going to my primary doctor tomorrow about it.
