Acupuncture and Osteoporosis?

Posted by pennykj @pennykj, Oct 3, 2023

Has anyone tried acupuncture to help reduce bone loss or improve bone quality due to osteoporosis?

I just came across this article which indicates acupuncture may be helpful.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36521826/#:~:text=There%20is%20accumulating%20evidence%20to,KI3%2C%20BL18%2C%20and%20GB39.

I have significant osteoporosis in my spine, but no fractures so far and I am searching for anything other than osteo prescription meds (which scare me). I am trying many new things right now (6 prunes/day, Marodyne LiV, collagen and am getting ready to try L. reuteri probiotic soon) in addition to the "normal" stuff.

A friend suggested I research acupuncture.

I did acupuncture for years and it helped me with energy and brain function. I didn't notice any help with osteoporosis.
I take calcium, vitamin D and collagen. I walk and normally do weight training on machines. (Low weights)
I had one or two shots of prolia that improved the osteoporosis.

Good luck to you.

@pennykj it looks like the study dealt with preserving bone density and alleviating symptoms (though osteoporosis does not have symptoms I have been told). It doesn't mention reversing loss that has occurred.

I was afraid of drugs and my docs were afraid for me due to a variety of other issues. I started Tymlos at a low dose and ramped up, and mostly did 3/4 dose for the full time. I had excellent gains in my spine. Maybe that approach would help you.

@pennykj Thank you for posting the link. The abstract indicates that the acupuncture improves “bone quality”. Whether or not acupuncture improves bone density is preliminary and unclear. Personally, I would not use this article (which is a review article of other studies) to make a decision on whether to try acupuncture for osteoporosis.

My mother had osteoporosis and was frail by my age (71 years old). She had two fractures that I know of (shoulder and hip) both from falls in her late 60’s. I’m more active than she was and I’ve worked on balance over the past few years in addition to weight training that I’ve been doing for over 30 years. Still, I did have a fracture (sacrum) due to pelvic radiation therapy and I don’t want to have any more fractures. I’m starting on Evenity on my endocrinologist’s advice. I’m in the osteopenia range.

I am interested in trying acupuncture for severe arthritis pain. The Integrative Medicine Department in my hospital does not participate with insurance for acupuncture. I do not know how to find a professional who is qualified to perform acupuncture who will allow me to pay them directly.
Anyone have any luck obtaining this service ? And what were the results ?
Thank you

My Integrative Medicine doctor recommended that I try acupuncture for osteoarthritis. She suggested that I go to this website to find a practitioner who is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine:

https://www.nccaom.org/find-a-practitioner-directory/

Anyone who practices acupuncture in my state (Michigan) is required to be licensed by our state board. I hope this is also the case where you live.

I personally did not notice much result other than relaxation and feel calm. It turned out, though, that the pain I was experiencing was from a sacral fracture that I did not know I had. Now that the fracture has healed much of the discomfort has gone away. So, I may try acupuncture again for the osteoarthritis.

Acupuncture works on my arthritic thumbs and has for years. I believe there is a national association for experienced practitioners.
