Abnormal period after starting menopause

Posted by natalie1177 @natalie1177, Dec 14, 2025

Hi! Im new to this site so i hope I'm doing this well. Sorry for any mistakes, english is not my first language.

My mother is 52 and she has started menopause about 2 years ago, but yesterday she has started her period again after some time of discomfort. She thought that the dull pain was coming from her colon, since she (i think) has IBS. Yet, when she got a colonoscopy nothing was found. She also went to the gynecologist and everything was okay. All these check ups were months ago. Turns out she had a bacteria called Helicobacter, which she treated herself for. Anyway..i thought these things were relevant.. Im incredibly concerned about this new period. She also told me she experienced tender breasts before the menstrual cycle, which i suppose hints towards hormonal problems.

Also, i think it's important to mention that her sister died recently from what started as endometrial cancer and spread out on the span of about 5 years since she first got her diagnostic.

Any tips would help! Im incredibly stressed and unsure how to help her.

@laura1970 I tried pressuring her into going to a gynecologist earlier but she keeps telling me she will just go next year during her regular check ups, usually in spring. Im afraid it will be late and whatever issue there may be will only get worse by then. Thank you though, i will continue trying till she gets checked out, hopefully soon.

@natalie1177. Thank you writing on behalf of your mother. I agree with the others here. Any vaginal bleeding or spotting after one has not had a menstrual period for more than one year (the definition of menopause) is not normal. I hope you will encourage your mother, along with your insistence and help, to advocate that this needs more investigation. Many of us here, myself included, experienced vaginal bleeding in menopause. I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer a few months after I had the vaginal bleeding. I was treated (radical hysterectomy 6 years ago) and I'm here to say I'm glad I immediately made an appointment with my gynecologist. While it's possible that your mother's vaginal bleeding could be any number of other diagnoses why take the chance?

If it happens that the vaginal bleeding is cancer and it is an aggressive cancer then waiting until next Spring is not a good idea. She may be fearful about what happened to her sister. It is anxiety-provoking to get these medical evaluations but in my case I'm glad I did it. I hope your mother will do the same.

Here is a link for why the uterus has the same hormones, however older woman who are empowered lack this we cram and over schedule everything is just to quick. Ever felt like you half do everything lately. Projects start deadlines kick in; However theses cases. Work is always stressful. Forgetfulness hurts a person career and personal life. Stress does and definitely not knowing how to handle stressful incontrollable events due to the imbalance sometimes we Starbucks, Panera bread, yoga, hair, and nail salon spending money on how to relax. With the proper hormones I am saving a lot since I can just take a hormone when I menostrate. I don't need much company lately better listener not needing approval, or acceptance just dealing with the change not confused brain is just so relax check with your OBGYN for the best hormone insert I looking into IUD so for now i am on the Progestin pill nausea and vomiting's big thing the first 2 days 3rd day which is 12/14/2025 no vomitting morning nausea.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I really hope you are doing well now.

You may be right, the recent death of her sister really shook her up. I talked with her about the gynecologist and she told me she would go in January. I hope it's not too late by then. I wish you the best!!

Please have her check it out. In 2009 I had stopped my period for a while and started bleeding off and on and I kept putting it off until it got so bad I went to emergency room. They did a vaginal ultrasound and found my lining of uterus thick. Then a gyn did D and C and found endometrial cancer it was stage 1b. Please don't take a chance. Sadly mine came back in 2016 but thankfully chemo and surgery and letrozole I have been in remission for almost 9 years. Please get it checked out

Sounds terrifying. Im really glad youre doing better now.

I convinced her to get checked out in January. She has some sort of health insurance from my father's workplace, since hers doesnt offer the same benefits. She told me she will get some bloodwork done and go to the gynecologist after. Im not exaclty soothed but i suppose its better than nothing.

Anyway, i hope youre okay now. Thank you so much for sharing your story!
