A1C shock
In September, 2024, my A1C was 5.6.
In September, 2025, it had jumped to 5.9.
I am 88 years old.
Any advice?
Thanks!

@carbcounter
Thank you so much for letting me know that A1C results can vary on the same day,
Wow! For one yr difference, that's great!

5 ReactionsI wish my A1C was in the 5's. My first A1C test last year I was at 6.9, 3 months later down to 6.1. I tested last month after a year, and I am at 8.4 I am hoping with 2000mg of Metformin daily, my fish oils, probiotics that I can reduce my A1C. I went from 179lbs last month and today I am at 158lbs. My goal is down to 150lbs and get my A1C down to 5.9

7 ReactionsHi @jimbo12 “the mentor on diabetes” here, truly you are doing really well, as other members have said. Keep up the great work! I am going on 51 years of having diabetes. When I was diagnosed in 1975 there weren’t A1C tests; there weren’t even meters. There were little tablets and test strips to test for sugar in the urine. People had to go to a lab for a blood draw to find out their blood sugar. When the A1C became available mine was always 10 - 13. Thank God that treatment and technology has come such a long way. My last A1C was 6.4 and I was very happy with that! We can always do better, can’t we?

7 Reactions@cehunt57 1.Thank you for your kind words.
2. When I learned in September,2025, that my A1C was 5.9, I was shocked. So I immediately stopped all regular pastries, regular ice cream, and sugary drinks. 3. I checked my A1C on January 30, 2026. It was 5.5. I will try by best to eat regular sweets in MODERATION from now on. 4. Maybe something sweet every other day?

I’ve had 5.9 A1C for long time my primary doctor doesn’t seem to think this is too high! I’m wondering if I should see someone else for second opinion?!?

2 Reactions@too During the last 5 years, two doctors never even mentioned it whenever my blood tests came back as 5.9. It could be that for someone in my 80s, the numbers are looked at in a different light. Some of the other members will surely have some good advice for you -- and me.

Thank you for commenting, I will be 91 next Thursday still going strong, not sure why?!? 😁 when I mention my age (like last week at DMV) they think I’m 70 😂😂😂 love it. I think all my grand, great grandkids keep me young. Love being around young people makes me feel young with Gods grace! Take care

4 Reactions@too Here's my opinion as a non-medical person but a 20-plus-year diabetic.
You're fine. Relax. Life is troubling enough.
