72 hour water fasting, pros and cons?

Posted by drcvs @drcvs, Jan 8 9:56am

I just completed a 72 hour water fasting, during which I drank limited black coffee and tea. I’m in the refeeding stage. My research (USC) shows that during the 48-72 hours, the immune system is boosted. Has Mayo done any research or have any of you had any experience with 72 hour fasting? Supposedly it helps destroy cancer cells too. I’m a cancer survivor x2. Any information is appreciated! TIA!

@drcvs Here is what Mayo Clinic has to say baout fasting:
https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/intermittent-fasting/faq-20441303
Of particular note is their conclusion: "But the long-term health effects of intermittent fasting aren't clear. And some studies find just limiting calories in general may have the same benefit as intermittent fasting.
Also, researchers don't know if different fasting cycles have the same benefits. Some evidence suggests that a 16-hour fasting, 8-hour eating cycle may raise heart disease risk compared with other time-restricted eating cycles.
Intermittent fasting also may cause people to feel very tired and dizzy. It can affect diabetes management and cause headaches or mood swings. Intermittent fasting also may cause constipation and affect the menstrual cycle."

Please note that if you regularly take any medications or supplements, you NEED to consult your health care provider before any fasting beyond a few hours. Many medications act differently on an empty stomach, or can even be harmful to the stomach lining.
