6 months of unexplained twitches throughout body, high WBC

Posted by berber19 @berber19, Oct 9 1:27am

Hi all,
Am a 37 yo female healthy and work in healthcare.

6 months ago I woke up to heart palpitations. After a week of this, and then feeling “off” during one day, decided to go to urgent care. My ekg was way off and they sent me to ER. Initially they found nothing expect abnormal ekg, then I came back 4 hours later with worsening palpitations and my potassium was way low.

Cardiologist tests all normal.

After all this scare I stated having body twitches, initially with palpitations was like whole body was twitching, then turned to just little here and there but has been every day since then. At night one arm or both will go to sleep. Palpitations have resolved but these symptoms remain. Has kept me from sleeping well. Symptoms get worse around my period.

MRI today came back with normal results. Neurologist expected it would, but glad to have confirmation.

From the initial er visit my WBC was elevated around 12. And has hovered around there at each check up since. My pcp now suggesting hematology referral. Have been losing some more hair than normal past month or so too. But no pain and energy is generally ok.

Sound familiar to anyone.

Been so many guesses, post-Covid? Unknown cancer? Auto-immune? Allergy? Etc etc.

Working in healthcare sometimes has its disadvantages because you imagine yourself in every scenario you have seen. But my health anxiety is getting better with mindfulness.

Thanks

You might want to have a Lyme test (and tests for other tick-borne diseases). A Western Blot test is much better than an Elisa for Lyme.

What do you mean that that first EKG was "way off"?

Except for abnormal EKG, I’ve had similar symptoms since last year. I’m still not sure of the causes. My neurologist referred me to rheumatologist and it’s not believed to be autoimmune, which is a relief.

I got the body wide twitches soon after I was scheduled to see my first neurologist. After emg was normal they left quickly. Recently, I’ve a few return. I’m now suspecting anxiety as the culprit. I suffer with health anxiety, but do well with talk therapy.

I have been diagnosed with post covid syndrome and B12 deficiency (taking daily treatment). Have you had covid? Have you checked B12 level? Checked thyroid?

The awakenings with arms/hands going to sleep has been a big problem for me. It’s intermittent, but can disrupt sleep. I also had excessive hair shedding, but that has stopped. I’m seeing dermatologist and on Minoxidil. I have other symptoms too of post covid, but my taste/smell disorder has improved dramatically.

I hope you get some more responses and can figure out what’s causing your symptoms. Is your BP normal?

Not sure why your PCP would elect a Hematology consult before pursuing other specialist. Infectious disease would be an option if WBC remain elevated. What about the low potassium.....did anyone address that? Health anxiety is very common especially if you've worked in health care or had unaddressed health issues with no resolution. Basic and extensive lab work can be very revealing. I believe there used to be a lab test called Spectra-cell that analyzed lab based on almost ever component in one's body and how the minerals etc were utilized and/or low or high. That in itself may reveal something. Keep at it until you find an answer.

Thank you for your response. I’m really glad I posted, it is helpful to know not alone.

Glad it’s not autoimmune for you.

I was sick for 3-4 weeks with a respiratory bug just a few weeks before the initial palpitations started, I never tested for Covid but am highly suspicious that is what it was, as everyone in our household had it and it took all of us awhile to recover, different than a typical bug.

B12 and thyroid have been normal, BP has been normal too.

only labs that have been consistently off are wbc and neutrophils, and glucose. All high.

Thank you so much!

I agree, it seemed an odd referral from pcp, especially as last time it was high she was adamant it was nothing to be concerned with. Then this time I had to request for it to be checked again, and now she’s concerned and fixed on that way to pursue it. Seems like there are other avenues. The last couple visits with pcp have left me bit frustrated with lack of clarity on what to do. I know that is common too, especially when weird cluster of symptoms arise.

Also no one has ever explain why potassium was low, that is one of my most frustrating things! Because I know that is bizarre for it to happen out of nowhere for a health adult taking no medications.

I do have some chronic ibs type symptoms with several food sensitivities and since regular more loose stools, but this seems extreme to cause low K.

I will see how I can pursue this testing that you mention, sounds like it could be very helpful.

Also of note, I have constant tingling in lips annd weird feeling in mouth annd with swallowing. Recently ENT noted inflammation and excess mucus build up but everything else looked good. Have had extra saliva build up regularly. This also wakes me or bothers me during the day. He suggested allergy testing.

Glucose is high? Did they do A1c? That would get my attention if high. I have type 1 diabetes. It can cause an assortment of symptoms.

Also, ref. you being sick prior to symptoms commencing. My neurologist and ENT at Duke say 1 negative covid test doesn’t mean you don’t have it. I had classic symptoms right before most of my symptoms hit. Unfortunately, even if it is post covid, there’s not much known about how to treat it.

PCP did do an A1C at few months ago and was normal. When I asked again this last visit to see an endocrinologist about why glucose is still high she said probably cause I ate before I came…I don’t think she even looked that it’s been high at every blood work and also why would it be out of range, even if I just ate that doesn’t seem normal.

Post covid has always been my suspicion…just seems so crazy and so few answers. Is this what you and doctors have been leaning towards for you?

@berber19 have you considered getting a blood glucose meter, or even urine strips(but meter is much better). It could help you at least pin the blood sugar issue down.
