2+ weeks post-op and looking for soft food suggestions

Posted by cmss @cmss, Dec 5, 2023

Hello! I had gastric bypass surgery on November 17, 2023 and am trying to eat more diverse soft foods. So far I seem to be able to tolerate scrambled eggs, Greek yogurt, Jello, Popsicles, canned peaches, and cream of wheat. Can anyone suggest other tasty (protein-y) soft foods that I might not be thinking of?
Also, I seem to always have a weird taste in my mouth. I'm thinking it is from the chewable Tums and chewable multivitamin. Any suggestions on what would help with that?
And any other tips/tricks from folks who have had this surgery??
Thanks in advance!!!

Glad things are going good, you might want to check out this article "Guidance on Selecting Protein Powders, Shakes, and Bars"

In addition to PLAIN Greek yogurt every day I also make sure to have Gatorade Zero Protein drinks on hand. 60 calories per 26.9oz bottle, mild flavor and10 grams of protein. I learned to tolerate, then like and now love PLAIN Greek yogurt. I will mix in fresh fruit, cacao, raspberry jam sometimes for variation. I always search stores for high protein foods but cannot tolerate the often chocolaty sports drinks that are high calorie. Those are easy to find. Even the drinks like Ensure make me gag. I pretty much live on plain Greek yogurt for 25-50% of my daily food intake.

Congratulations on your surgery! When I had the gastric sleeve over 10 years ago, I lived on cottage cheese because it is high in protein!

Hi. I am 2 weeks postop too. I had my surgery on 11/24/23 and am really struggling with finding blended foods to eat. Baby food stage 1 applesauce and prune applesauce works for me and the protein shakes. But I would love more ideas. Tomato soup and runny mashed potatoes made me sick.

Tomato soup was too rich for me but I was able to have a bite or two of mashed potatoes at Thanksgiving. Vanilla Greek yogurt is a good option. I blended it at first and it was good. I've been able to have scrambled eggs and now fat free cottage cheese - all chewn really well. Sugar free Jello goes down ok. I blended a healthy recipe type split pea and ham soup at Thanksgiving and had several bites of it. I also made chicken soup and blended that. Good luck!!!!

I would throw meals that I made for my family into my Ninja and mash it up. Most meals were delicious! My favorite was chili.

Wendy’s chili is amazing. You can even buy it in the store!

Honestly I had the "weird" taste for the entire first 6 months or so after my bariatric surgery. Everything also tasted strange to me! I always loved coffee and after surgery for an entire year it tasted like dirt! Lol As for soft foods. ..try mashed potatoes and mix in the flavorless protein powder! You can get pre-made mashed potatoes near the meat section in the grocery store then take a scoop out, add the protein and anything else that you want for flavor! It was a go to for me once I tried it!!! Good luck to you! Female, 5'8" SW 289, CW 145. Maintenance for last 5 years.
