Hello, my mother suffers from a tumor in the rectum, 6 cm from the anus. The doctor advised her to take a dose of chemotherapy, which caused her pharyngeal tenderness, severe pain, and an inability to breathe for 10 hours. Two days later, we visited the doctor again and they told her to take radiation therapy for 6 weeks to shrink the tumor, and after that we will do a procedure. She has an operation to remove the tumor. What do you advise me? My mother is 63 years old. I am from Baghdad, Iraq

I can see you are concerned for your mom. That must've been frightening for her and your family when she developed such intense breathing issues after chemotherapy.

Can you clarify for me? Has your mom already had surgery to remove the tumor or is she having radiation first to shrink the tumor and then surgery?

Hello, she has not yet undergone surgery... and the radiation sessions are due in two weeks.. Question: What type of food is she allowed to eat?

I cannot travel with my sick mother. My condition does not allow me. Can I send the patient’s file via the Internet? Thank you.

@hhsn12211 Each case is different; also doctors have varying approaches. Some cases require the tumor to be shrunk through chemo and/or radiotherapy before surgery. Other cases can be managed by surgery first and a wait-and-see attitude afterwards or chemo and/or radiotherapy after.
If there is a way you could get a second opinion, I would encourage you to do it. Always ask the doctors why they suggest such or such treatment.
