Chronic Migraines
Has anyone faired well with chronic migraines in going to a Neurologist? I have had them since I was a little girl and have only been treated by an allergist, primary & ENT doctor (Sinus infections cause them for me too). I have rotated migraine meds ever so often as it seems they stop working and I have to start a new one. Presently have been on Zomig for a while. I went a long time without them and now I am having them more frequently. Blessings to all and thank you.

The Gabapentin caused quite a bit of weight gain. But so far the good outweighs the bad. I was in the hospital for a week before I got stabilized and could walk again.
Best of luck,

My migraines were caused by facet joints in my neck. Scans on the neck doesn't show what happens when moving or using the. Get a flexion x-ray, 6 views, not 4 and see what happens while the neck is not straight, this finally found the problem. I am fused C34-56. Just found C23 facets have caused my vertigo for 16 years. Then the same on C67 which released all tension in my body, no more spasms and fibromyalgia significant pain reduction.
Yes, you need to see a neurologist who is a migraine - headache specialist. Not all neurologists are.
Forget the other specialties you have seen. And as a long time migraine sufferer (beginning with a concussion) I can tell you it is very common to go 'round and 'round the migraine medication cycle. Very common initially for a new migraine medication to be so helpful and suddenly, without warning, ceases to be so. So it's on to the next recommended medication. You need a "preventative" medication in addition to an "abortive" medication.
Plus a migraine "arsenal"...migraine ice caps, eye shields, sunglasses for TV/computer glare, medication for nausea & medication for dizziness. Even herbal teas - ginger/peppermint are good. I have found a neuro-modulating device can be helpful, check them out on line. Only one you can get without a prescription from your physician. Found out what are your migraine "triggers", mine is anxiety and stress (big time) - and skipping a meal. I also have chronic insomnia which does not help but so sensitive to sleeping aids I take nothing for sleep. And get peppermint aromatherapy. It can come in a small "roll on" tube, apply to skin/under your nose...peppermint does help migraines (at least for me). More migraine medications have been approved by the FDA in the last 5 years vs. the last 20 years. And there are also the "off-label" medications which can help migraine sufferers.
Finally check out the World Migraine Summit held annually or the National Headache Foundation for more resources. Most people do not know that "migraine" is NOT a headache but a neurological disorder. It can be a real monster, beyond debilitating. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy if I had one. All my very best to you!
Are you perimenopausal? If so, an endocrinologist ora NAMS certified GYN might be helpful.
debkl, No I am not, but, thank you so much for the suggestion. Blessings & Hugs....
Thank you for a wellspring of information. I will look some of these up and very much considering the neurologist route. Praying for yours to get better. You are correct. I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy. Blessings & Hugs....
