Has anyone developed bags under eyes after cataract surgeries?

I had a right eye cataract surgery done in May, 2023 and the left one in June, 2023. Three months have elapsed and I noticed that the bags under my eyes which started after the surgeries have not disappeared. I am wondering how long it would take for this condition to go away on its own.

Sounds strange I know. Your eyes are actually over reacting to the dryness. If you use a good brand of drops with no preservatives on a regular basis it should improve.

It’s true, watering eyes can be due to dryness. Your eyes are trying to compensate for the dryness by excessive tearing. An eyedrop without preservatives can help.

I developed bags under my eyes just recently. I feel I look 10 years older than what I am. Are there medical reasons why we get these unsightly things?

I had cataract surgery on both eyes, at different times, in 2015. Thankful, no side effects since having the surgeries.

My bags now have a clearly defined line underneath them. Also, my left eye (cataract surgery on August 1st) now constantly weeps. If I do not blot the edges of my eyes, tears fall down my face. This is supposedly my "good" eye with 20/20 vision, but I cannot read because it is like trying to see underwater. Did anyone experience teary eyes after cataract surgery? Is it a temporary issue? @joybringer1 I had cataract surgery in 2021 & 2022. Very successful.
However, three years later (early 2025), I developed watery eyes that have continued to worsen.
Now I am having to continually be wiping eyes in order to see where my feet are when going down steps and to read. Drops for dry eyes of no assistance. Oculoplastic surgeon has determined that there is no blockage to the tear ducts. Has recommended Ectropion repair and punctal snip with possible failure as high as 30-40%. Will be undergoing the surgery in 3 days time. Anyone else been through this experience?

Yes, I have bags under my eyes after cataract surgery. I still have one more appointment with my optometrist and I am hopeful the blur on my right eye will go away. And, I have a bruise under that eye most likely caused by the clear plastic lens that I wore at night. I still have access to this doctor for ninety days at no charge. The $300 he received after each surgery pays for this. These are recent surgeries so @minnesota10 has good advice about giving my body time to heal. The first surgery was awful because I was not given enough anesthesia and I felt pain. I had the nurse's hand in a death grip. I heard the doctor who was operating say "We need to give her more Versed next time." I had been telling the anesthesiologist all along that I was difficult to sedate and the little amount of Versed did nothing for me. The next time, I had a different anesthesiologist and he put a port in my hand and gave me Versed and two other drugs and I felt no pain. I was so grateful to the second doctor who listened to me and most likely there was the notes from my first surgery. I wrote a "thank you" note to him. My husband had these surgeries two years ago and has a massive floater in one eye and he has a film on the back of both eyes. We are told this is scar tissue that formed and now he will have a laser treatment on both eyes. It is called Yag; however, nothing will help the floater. I only have a few of these, but his is terrible. It is always something. With all good wishes, @joybringer1.

@joybringer1 hello, I have had all the same issues, had the yag lazer done in both eye, as well. I recently got a huge floater in my eye and was referred to a retinal eye specialist. She found large tears and holes in my retina. You should go have that checked out. She will be doing a surgery to remove the large floater and lazer the tears and holes. Good luck with all your issues, and God bless you for complete healing.

@terre, Thank you for your advice. I had not thought of doing anything else with my eyes other than trying to cure my dry eyes. My husband was so alarmed at having a huge floater, he made an appointment with our eye doctor who said it was just normal. You have given me something to think about and my husband and I will discuss the next step. Thanks again! With all good wishes, @joybringer1.
