Pseudomonas aureginosa: When did your doctor decide to start treating?
When were your pseudomonas treated and how did your doctor decide it was time to do it? I have bronchiectasis, MAC and was diagnosed with pseudomonas in August. My pneumonologist thought it was colonized and I did not have symptoms so she decided not to treat it. I had my sputum culture last week and again pseudomonas was grown. Now she wants me to decide if I want treatment with Cipro if I think I need it. How do I know if I need it? I asked if they counted the size of colonies (I don't know if they even ever do it) but the nurse who called me did not know the answer. So if you had pseudomonas, please respond to my post and share how yours was delt with. I am scared to start another antibiotic and is it better to start early the treatment or wait for symptoms (what kind?)?

Hello/.........to whomever wants to comment. I have COPD, Bronchietasis, and I got Psuedonmonis and Mycobacteria. On Dec 6, 2023 my Infection Disease Dr from Sanford in Sioux Falls, SD, took me off the Bactrim that I had been on all year. Dr said the Bactrim got rid of my MAC Norcardia. And the also took me off Azithromycin that I'd been on since August 2022. That was the only antibiotic I was on at that point...beings she took me off the Bactrim. So I'm not taking any antibiotics at this moment (Jan 7, 2024.) I was on a third antibiotic, ethambutol but it damaged my Macula in my eye. I was on -Rifibutin in 2022...it damaged my liver to the point of hepatitis. I'm doing saline & Levabuterial in a Nebulizer, Aerobic flutter, shaker vest, Symbicort Inhaler, Singular, NAC muscinex. Beings I refused the last two antibiotics Clofazimine an Amikacin because of side effects. I started Vitamins B, C, D. & Detox teas, different nuts and foods mentioned for holistic healing. I'm wondering if anyone has had any luck with any pills or IV's or healthy food, or antibiotics that have been making you feel better???????

2 ReactionsThanks Arlo @ equanimous. Sounds like you are taking excellent care of yourself. I hope your good health prevails!! The Pseudo really did impact my health but I'm hopeful that perhaps the short run on antibiotics somehow knocked it out. My best wishes....Kate

1 ReactionFor how long did you take Bactrim and dose? It was hard on me but some said it is a good antibiotic.
I got told I had grown a psuedanoma aerigenosa back last sept 2025 . Was never mentioned to me that is was so bad . I thought it was like mac. I was not given a discussion about eradicating or even a try at it. But I also have bronchiactasis and had mac but it disappeared apparently after I had lung cancer resected from lung. I regret not knowing about what this psuedanoma is and that I had an option to treat. I had been complaining of drowing in muscus everyday but my doctor did not question anything . I had no fever but was sickly fatigued. Felt like I couldn't breathe. Until this past month and had a severe infection in both lungs ,fevers for weeks , was taken off oral antibiotics, I wasn't getting better. I suggested IV IN PICC . We did mid libe of 2 weeks of an antibiotics. Which eventually got me better. During the treatment I picked up RSV . What a devastating illness. Dont wish this on anybody. Bronchiactasis, psuedanoma A. I get side effects to many antibiotics so im leary if anything NOW. I wish and pray for everyone dealing with this dreadful disease

4 Reactions@smc17 I am so sorry to hear what you have gone through. We all probably have our crosses but some get it worse. If I were you I would find an immunologist who would check all your immunoglobulins and who would work on improving your immunity. Also check for levels of vitd3 and b12(simple blood work) I always have low D3 now within the range but on the lower side and low B12( and had tingling/ numb feet from the big 3. I wish you get better and stronger
@smc17 I like you had Pseudomonas last year starting with a UTI , a lung infection , a maxillary sinus infection left side and eye infection left side . I was put on Zosyn IV through PICC line for 2 wks . That if go to hospital which I opted for the former … My white count came down to normal so everyone thought I was better . Well lo and behold , I went to my ENT Fr for routine check up a few mos ago and he said this looks like it did last year so he took a culture . Came back Pseudomonas . Was referred again to infectious Disease center and put back on Zosyn for 3 weeks . I had to go every day for the nurses to clean the IV area and flush and change the liquid package and program it to the little machine that dispensed it throughout 24 hrs . So I had to sleep with O2 on one side and the Fanny pack with the med , iV pack snd the machine on the other ..all for 21 days. They just pulled the IV as another culture was done which came back “No growth” good news ! However we all who have dealt with this knows that Pseudomonas builds a biofilm around it to protect itself and becomes resistant to treatment .. so I’m praying that it’s irradiated for good .
I’m so sorry to hear about your bouts with this and then to catch RSV on top of it …let’s stay in touch and keep each other updated in case something new comes along . All the best to you .. Kay Bastasini

1 ReactionMy doctors dont do any type of other testing unless I request. I seem to be one if those patients that look good but I am not . I feel like im my own doctor. I have to request it. Im beginning to wonder if I have had psuedanomas spread. I have had eye subhemmorage in left and right eyes off and on. How do u know that you have a uti with psuedonamas.? My story staryed in 2019 with a bacterium called nocardia elegans / veterana pulmonary. Was treated with 2 different antibiotics for 7 m. Got cleared. Then got very sick again. Had a minor mac chaelonae appear then gone then mac avium along with cancer in upper left lung . Resected left upper lobe in aug 2024 . Seem to be OK. Go back in like 6m for CT scan of lungs. After resection of upper left lobe. I seem to be clear of mac avium . Now I have psuedanomas Aerigenosa in lungs. Dont know what else. I wish I had regular scans snd sputum every 3 to 6 m. But unless I ask I dont seem to get them. I feel so frustrated at times. I do everything I know to stay healthy. Bronchiactisis is a night mare I dont wish on anyone

1 Reaction@smc17 What I have noticed over the past several years is we continually replace one germ with another after starting initially with MAC. And yes RSV is horrible!!! Been there done that one too!! No bueno. ( irene5)

What breathing devices do you use for lung volume? I also have had BE for almost 30 years and Pseudomonas.
