Gabapentin side effects?

Posted by Sundance(RB) @sundance6, Apr 13, 2019

I am a regular on the Mayo Board! I don't know what I would do without it! Our doctors don't want to discuss openly the things about illnesses and side effets of drugs and other things. Anyway, my question to all of you is Gabapentin and it's side effects. I have been on it now for 6 months. My doctor raised me from 100mg. to now I am on 400mg. three times a day.
The problem is my tiredness! I happen to be in a friends office yesterday and she was taking some medicine. She said she was taking Gabapentin. I asked why and she said she had, had shingles back when and it still helped with the pain. I know the drug is percribed for many things that is why I take it for my issues.
I told her I had been taking it for about 6 months. She asked if I had been tired all the time, just out of the Blue. OF COURSE I SAID YES! She said it took her a year before she got out of the tiredness.
Let me know if any of you have experienced the same thing. Also let me know at what dosage you may be on? I know this is all confidential!
Again Thanks to The Mayo Clinic and Everyone who is kind enough to be open with their lives!
Sundance!

So sorry to hear about your experience. I'm glad you had no long lasting effects from it.
My husband has discussed this issue numerous times with several doctors and was told he should try differing the mgs in each dose to see if he noticed any relief. He tried this to no avail. Onward we go.

Not sure this will be helpful but thought I would share it so that you know there are others out there who have similar experiences as your husband.

Gabapentin doesn't make me tired - I don't have any side effects. I started with the lowest dose but now I take the maximum. My condition has gotten worse over the years and doctors have had to increase my doses.

One thing I have learned from the other patients here is that different meds affect different people in different ways. We try things that our doctors suggest until we find something that has the most benefit and the least downside.

Best wishes! Peggy

My husband was electrocuted in June. He is currently taking 300mg of gabapentin 3 times a day and has one lightheaded spell after another. He's incredibly frustrated by this but feels the gabapentin is helping with the shooting pain in his feet and perhaps calming the shakiness in his hands and knees. Has anyone else had issues with being lightheaded and nearly passing out when stretching while on this drug? Has anyone else ever been hit with high voltage and lived to tell about it like my husband? So far he has seen a number of physicians but still not one that has dealt with this type of injury.

Hi. I may have said this before. I wad transitioning from lamictal to gaba to see if it helped CRPS pain any better. Still on a low dose, my lipid profile went thru the roof.y normal is close to below the range. HDL high. LDLs low. Cholesterol so pow its barely in the range. Same with triglycerides.
On a low dose of gaba, they went off the scale high. Like my cholesterol went up 100+ points.

I came of after a gew montjs and tjey hsve returnrd to normal tho not quite as good as they were. Yhis us a kniwn side effect that doctors ignore till they then put you on a statin and a low fat diet instead of realizing its the drug. At se point dose and time dependent it will stay elevated.

I.hope this helps. I went back on lamictal bit there is only one generic that is not a bad generic. (Unichem.) These drugs are used for seizures and if someone returns to having seizures, the generic is no good. Thru reason, I discovered a group that chemically tests drugs. Unichem was the only lamictal yo pasd their chemist. We don't ever tall about "not all generics are created equal." If it doesn't work, research your indian manufacturer. Also don't let thd pharmacy give you a new generic each month. Unichem lamictal is the only one walmart carries.

Check your lipid profile a few times a year. This is real about lipids even if your dr doesnt agree. My comparison was so drastic she had to agree. And ok now a year later. Careful folks. This is a real gaba issue.

Gabapentin is sold through the internet and is abused by some people. I foolishly tried it and it made me feel sick. I threw it out.

Romans8. I was taking so much gabapentin, and my gastro doctor told me it was most likely the gabapentin that caused it. He said there is a major nerve in your stomach, which aids in digestion, so the gabapentin turned out to be the cause, also blocking that stomach nerve from fully digesting my food. I went from 1800 mg a day to 600 mg a day. The gastro paresis went away in just a few days, but I suffered with it for months. I am going to see a pain management doctor to see what they suggest. Spinal cord stimulator is one thing to try, but I'm very hesitant. I've seen so many doctors about the neuropathy, to include a podiatrist. She had a compounding pharmacy make a cream consisting of 6 different meds. It works well, but only for 3 or 4 hours. I'm constantly on the search for relief.
Let me know if u need anymore info.

I appreciate your responding, and I am so happy to hear your gastroparesis has been resolved by reducing your Gabapentin. I have been taking 300mg of Horizant 2x/day, which doesn’t sound like much, but my pain doc says it’s stronger than plain Gabapentin. I’d like to reduce it, but not sure how else to manage my small fiber neuropathy pain which affects my whole body. I saw my neurologist this week and he believes that my gastroparesis was caused by the COVID virus which I had previous to developing the stomach issues. That also affects the autonomic nerves in the stomach in some people. So meanwhile I’m following a soft liquid diet and still searching for a solution to the neuropathy pain besides Gabapentin. My neurologist did write a prescription for low dose naltrexone to try. I wonder if anyone on this site has ever tried that for pain management. Like you I’m Leary of the spinal stimulator since I have friends who have had them implanted and had nothing but persistent problems.
I don’t mean to sound so discouraged but it does get weary at times. Thanks for listening.

What are the options if you can’t take meds for pain? My mom has suspected neuropathy pain in her legs from VB12 deficiency. She’s talked to her primary about it. She got a rollator to assist with walking. My mom resists most all meds. She does take B12 injections to keep her levels up. Is there anything else for pain, like electrical devices, lotions, massage? I bought her a battery muscle massager, but I don’t think it helped.

I am also in chronic pain. Located in the thoracic region of my back. Pain management doc calls it Chronic Pain Syndrome. Constant muscle spasms. My PCP prescribed Gabapentin however after taking it for a week my hair started falling out! So I d/c’d it and started on Tizanidine. That helps but makes me sleep. I’ve tried P.T., massage, acupuncture and a chiropractor. They all helped for about a half day but the spasms come back. Chronic pain leaves me tied to either an ice pack or a heating pad. I’m so discouraged..

I've been on 1800mg per day for several years and I still have problems staying awake as long as I did before I was on it. Unfortunately that causes me to wake middle with difficulty falling back asleep several days a week.

Middle of the night, sorry. Tried to get off twice but my nerve pain from previous back surgeries comes back with a vengeance.
