Which Medical Marijuana is best to go to sleep and stay asleep

Posted by HomeAgainLA @llynch17056, Jan 6 9:30am

After a nasty case of Covid in March 2020 I developed sleeping issues. I do all the right things (diet, exercise, turn off tv and phone, room temp, etc), but still have inconsistent sleep. I finally tried 1/2 5mg Ambien last night, fell asleep at 9:30 pm, but awake at midnight. At 2:00 am took the other half and finally slept a few more hours. I have a prescription for Medical Marijuana, but it hasn’t helped either. I tried the ones recommended for sleep that have THC and CBN, as well as various mg levels of pure THC.

Any suggestions on how better to use THC or even something else? My doctor does not seem to be tuned into this problem.

Indica strains are known for their relaxing and sedative effects and are often preferred over sativa strains for sleep. I don't think Mayo will appeciate specific product recommendations but your dispensary should be able to give advice. Most commercial medical marijuana products contain a 50/50 mixture of THC/CBN.

Good afternoon @gratefulbob. Would please help me understand your last statement? I have been using commercial medical marijuana products since 2012. I have never had a 1:1 tincture that included a 50/50 mixture of THC/CBN. For sleep, I use 2:1 CBD/THC and for help with pain, I use 1:1 CBD/THC tincture. Where would I find a 50/50 mixture of THC/CBN?

Thanks for your time and patience.

I don't know what state you are in and if it is legal there. I am in California and there are many choices. I only use edibles occassionally. However, following are a few products which are recommended according to AI. (a friend of mine makes their own and I get mine for free).

Stiiizy's CBN Gummies, Papa & Barkley's Sleep Releaf Gummies, Koi CBD's Nighttime Rest Gummies, Wana Optimal Gummies, and Camino's CBN Sleep Gummies by Kiva are among the top recommendations. These gummies contain a combination of cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, and CBN, as well as terpenes and melatonin, which are known for their sleep-inducing properties

Good evening @gratefulbob. Thanks for your response. I get it now. By the way, I have had a good response from Papa and Barkley. Do you feel that "gummies" are consistent in today's market? When I started using them in San Miguel de Allende years ago they were inconsistent and a bit frightening. I haven't used them since. Should I?

I have found THC(5mg, very small amount),CBD,CBN to help, but I have to supplement my Lunesta with it. Ambien only works for about 2 hrs, hence you wake up and can't go back to sleep. Also, seems Ambien doesn't offer REAL sleep, no dreaming etc. After much research I asked for Lunesta. It lasts, for me, 4-6 hrs. and it permits cycling through the sleep phases. Nights that are difficult, even with Lunesta, I take 1/2 gummy, it works pretty good. If you want to go with no prescription sleep aid, the THC/CBD/CBN and natural herbal sleep aids are about it. Melatonin is controversial IMO. I don't take it. I hope one day we all find a simple, workable solution to our sleep problems. Mine has been lifetime, since a child. Is it true SOME people don't need as much sleep as others? Maybe, but not me. If I don't get >=6 hrs I'm done for the day.

Only use products which use outside testing of what they sell. California requires this. I have no idea about other states or countries.

Thank you. I agree with Ambien. I took it one night and won’t take it again. I found that the CBD and CBN seems to stir me up. I’m experimenting with various doses of THC. Last night I did 1/2 of a 20mg THC gummy. Wasn’t perfect, but not as bad a night as with Ambien.

LDH (LA Dept of Health) personnel are responsible for conducting inspections of medical marijuana production facilities and reviewing finished product test results to verify compliance with the requirements of La.

Two LA universities are the only producers in LA.

I use indica gummies, 10 mg THC. I buy from Rise dispensary . Indica strains work best for sleep for me. I do wake up at night but am able to go back to sleep without anxiety. I took Ambien for many years but am no longer taking. Good luck, sleep is so important. My physician is on board with this and feels medical marijuana is one of the more benign medications.

@gratefulbob,
Thanks for the reminder about the third party testing. That is a very important requirement.
