Transplant News and Events

Posted by Kristin Eggebraaten @keggebraaten, Feb 20, 2018

Hello everyone!
Many events are held each year and many news stories are published that may interest the transplant community. We thought it might be nice to let people know of some of these events and stories, even if they may not apply to everyone. In this discussion, feel free to post events and news stories that might be of interest to transplant patients, caregivers, or donors.

Of note, be sure that your posts don’t violate any of the rules of Connect – you can find those here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/community-guidelines/.
Specifically, please be sure you don’t post commercial postings, advertisements or solicitations.

  • Postings such as advertisements for your business, get-rich-quick schemes or solicitations for a charity will be removed. Unfortunately, it is impossible to verify the validity of each and every organization that solicits donations; therefore, to protect you from fraud, we must prohibit solicitations for charities.

What events are you looking forward to?

Rochester Transplant Patients - this is the moment you've all been waiting for! We are ready to plan for the Annual Transplant Patient Picnic! While we are still cautious about COVID numbers and concerns about gathering, our outside event will go on this year! See the attached flyer for info. The date of the picnic will be July 31, 2022, and will be held outside at Soldier's Field Park. We will be closely monitoring the COVID situation, and any changes in the event will be communicated through here and on our Facebook page (Transplantation at Mayo Clinic).
Feel free to share this information with all Mayo-Rochester transplant patients! We are excited for some great company and good food!

Hi, Kristin: I am not familiar with this picnic. Do some of the Mayo Clinic BMT Dept. staff also attend?

My 2-year “rebirthday” from a bone marrow transplant is July 22nd, and I would like to do something special for my BMT team. If they don’t attend the picnic, would it be possible to bring them a cake or something at the clinic? Not sure if you can answer that but any info is appreciated!

@edb1123 - yes, some of the staff will likely attend, although it is voluntary so I don't know who those staff might be. It's different every year. Happy Rebirthday in July! It's very nice of you to think of the staff during your celebration. While it is never necessary or expected, I am sure they would love to see you with treats in hand, provided the pandemic is at a level where it is safe for you to travel around doing this.

@edb1123, I have never been able to attend because of distance. I think that it would be a lot of fun to mix and meet with others.
I am aware that many of the local merchants do deliveries of their goodies. (cookies, cake, muffins, candy, pizza) to the Mayo Bldgs. This might be a safe and sure way to do something special for your team where they spend a lot of their time.
A nice note/card is always appreciated.

Happy Rebirthday on July 22!

Big NEWS! Our bone marrow transplant team just celebrated our 10,000th blood and marrow transplant this week! Yesterday we were able to host a meet and greet with our first patient and her donor. Also included was Dr. Robert Kyle who performed the first transplant and will be celebrating 70 years with Mayo Clinic in 2023. We are so honored to be surrounded by such rich history and longevity.

This sounds like fun! I live too far away in Kentucky, and so I hope that someone who attends will share a picture here.
My fingers are crossed for nice weather 🤞
Enjoy!!!

Hi, I just had my annual celebration of life picnic in April.
I found out a lot about my donor, his family is so kind, we did not meet in person but every April I send them a note to let them know their son Andy is my hero. His mom wrote me back and shared a lot w/me, she also set me some pictures. My heart hurst but is bursting w/ such gratefulness to them most of all her sharing w/me about my donor and what happened. Andy saved 3lives heart,liver,kidney.💚💚. So with that enjoy your picnic.😊😊

Hello everyone! I wanted to be sure that everyone was able to read this article about Mayo Clinic's record number of transplants in 2023. This was only possible because of the generosity of 1.986 donors that gave the gift of life in 2023 at Mayo. We are grateful to all of you, all of the caregivers, all of the patients, all of our staff and anyone who touched our department so that we can constantly carry on our mission of giving life to those in need.
