Pain in thigh 5 months after THR

Posted by linnie1948 @linnie1948, Jun 4, 2023

Hello everyone,
I have been experiencing pain in my thigh for the past three days. I had a complex THR at the end of January. I thought by now the thigh pain would be long gone. Does the pain come and go for awhile. It has been raining here for several days now and I was wondering if that was a factor as in the past I have had pain when it rained. Can arthritis still be present in the thigh after a THR? Was also wondering if I should cut back on walking on the treadmill although I am not going very fast or for long periods of time.

I had a TKR 5 years ago and I complained of my thigh hurting. I kept telling the surgeon but he ignored it because as long as the original pain in my groin was gone he was satisfied. Then two years ago changed doctors and I found out I have bursitis in the hip that was replaced. Evidently it happens to about 30% of people that have THR.

I have bursitis in my hip also after surgery. I am 4 months out and starting to feel a little normal other than my bursitis which has calmed down somewhat. I am now able to play Pickleball!!

Apparently after injecting with Tymlos for 2 years you must go back on Bisphosphonates for some years after that in order to maintain any increase in bone density. When I went to a class on Forteo at the #1 orthopedic hospital in the country I was definitely not told what would happen after Forteo. I was very disappointed.

Hello,
I had both hips done in December of 2020, and it literally took me about 1 1/2 to 2 years to feel normal again. Unfortunately I had to also have 2 total knee replacements just recently. I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis at the age of 47. The hips are great, You just have to be patient, the pain and numbness will go away.

Thank you. My surgeon told me that it would take 18-24 months for a full recovery which shocked me to no end. Yet he told me that I was doing better than expected. If you have a good surgeon the rest is up to you. Six weeks after my surgery I sent a message to my surgeon asking if I could go on the treadmill slowly and of course holding on for dear life. His assistant said ok as long as I was careful. I am going to be 75 soon and I have no time to waste in trying to recover as fast as I can being cautious of course.

I posted this somewhere else but i don't know how to find where that is to see any responses. I had a total hip replacement in july of 2023. it's now january 2024 and i have had pain in my gulte on the surgery side which can spider into my lower back. I needed the hip replacement do to avacular necrosis. my surgeon says everything looks good with x-rays and sent me to a spine guy for an MRI. that showed nothing, so i have gone back to the hip surgeon and are waiting the results of another MRI focused on the hip. The pain i have is mostly when I sit in a straight up or hunched forward position. I have done a fair bit of P.T. I'm in my early 40's and am unemployed because of this injury. I'm trying to find work becuase i'm out of money for insurance but i can't work if i'm in pain after the first 10 mins of being at my desk. Has this happened to anyone?

Has anyone explored whether you are dealing with pain from your sciatic nerve?
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sciatica/symptoms-causes/syc-20377435
If that is the issue, ice, stretching and exercise are your best treatment. When my sciatic nerve flares, I lay on 2# bag of frozen peas or corn, and once the pain subsides, I begin gently stretching and moving the leg. You can find a number of good stretches online. Then I get up and WALK, Walk, walk - as you described, sitting is the enemy.

Does this sound like something you can try? Can you find work that keeps you moving and not sitting at a desk? Or a workplace that uses adjustable workstations?

Thank you for the response. So far no one seems to think it is sciatica as the main tie-in of shooting down the leg doesn't seem to be an issue to me. like i said it seems to creep up the back more starting from what i would say is the sit bone. I hope that my follow up on Monday tells me something like a bursa or tailbone maybe. I will try the ice I've been using 0a heating pad at nights. I've not very consistent through-out the day doing this kind of stuff but i will try harder. as far as work I also have the double whammy of plantar factitious for a few years now, so that makes standing an walking fun. also I have this page bookmarked now but is there a way to go to where i have made posts before?

A little update. No update. So the MRI according to the surgeon reveled "no signals" that leads him to see anything that would be causing my pain. (I do wonder though if they take the MRI while I'm lying down, I don't have the pain while lying down. can they do something when I sit? i just kinda thought of that.) So he said it might be worth getting a second opinion but he thinks I'm grasping at straws and needs to wait for the full year of healing. And likely I just need to maybe more P.T. or join a gym. I don't really feel the P.T. has done anything to help this part of the problem, though It definitely helped getting range of motion back. So I have my records sent to another hip surgeon and I hope to get an appointment made soon.

Good luck to you. I hope your new surgeon is good. It's been a year since my thr. I am in so much pain. Also going to a second hip surgeon. It's hard to find someone who listens and cares. Changing pain management Dr also. My previous one was worthless. When I told him I was leaving his practice, he became rude. He was very stingy with the meds. I kept telling him they weren't helping me get through the day and night. He didn't care. I wake up every night in severe pain in my right leg. I would have to take a pill for relief. That would make me short. I'm so tired of hurting all the time.
