PRP (platelet rich plasma) injection?
Has anyone had PRP injections? I have upper hamstring tendonitis and recently had a prolotherapy injection, which hasn't seemed to help, so I'm looking at other options. I know they're expensive and not covered by insurance but if the success rate is high, it's something I might consider. Thanks!

I have a torn meniscus in one knee that I had scheduled for surgery, but got a second opinion once pain subsided. Delayed surgery and continued with conservative treatment, then PT. I was able to resume my normal routine without pain and even began a daily workout regimen. I do have occasional pain, but not severe. I’m interested in PRP too, though. Will be interested in responses you get.

2 ReactionsMy sister in law had the prp injection which insurance did not cover. It didn't help and she got a knee replacement. Maybe for a torn meniscus you just need arthroscopic surgery which my husband had for 2 tears and did very well . It's been at least 9 years.
Prp was considered experimental ,so insurance did not cover it. That was 4/5 years ago. And very costly!
Having the first of three procedures done a week from today. Don’t know how long it takes to be effective, but I’ll update when I have something.
It works pretty quickly. We did pay $1,000 but saved on PT! It was recommended by mainstream, to doctors at Mass General and Spaulding in Boston.
I'm due for a second injection in three weeks. My (tennis elbow) looked ugly on the ultrasound, comparing the injured elbow with the non-dominant arm elbow; was scheduled for surgery back in 2016 but my insurance company screwed up and I had non-refundable tickets to Brazil at the time so I couldn't affor to wait. I did some PT before getting my first injection at the VA in Palo Alto and it eased the swelling and discomfort a bit. I'm hoping this time I'll be ready to play tennis in another six weeks. I have Parkinson's Disease and had to stop surfing, my life since I was a 12-yr-old, but I had too much trouble balancing and popping up on my boards, so I just gave it up. I've been working hard to keep from declining and know that I'll never get better, but looking forward to playing tennis gives me hope--an important tool for aging (I'm 73) and have been an athlete my entire life. I'll let you know how the second injection works out.

3 Reactions@cadunkin, in addition to the responses you have received, I also moved your discussion and combined it with another one titled "PRP (platelet rich plasma) injection?" - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/prp-platelet-rich-plasma-injection/ so you could read even more responses and experiences on PRP injections.
@cadunkin, was there another treatment route suggested to you that you are hoping to avoid by learning more about PRP injections?

1 ReactionHi Mary,
I was happy to read your post about PRP injections for the knee. I have bone on bone osteoarthritis in my right knee and am scheduled for Hyaluronic gel injections starting next week. I am trying the gel first because it is covered by my insurance- but if it doesn’t help - I’ll try the PRP next. I am glad the PRP works for you.
I sure hope one or the other works well for you!
No other treatment suggested yet, as I’m seeing a sports medicine doctor. He suggests having three PRP injections, three months apart. I’m scheduled for the second one in a week. I’m hoping this treatment works, so I won’t have to go the surgery route.
Thanks to everyone for the excellent feedback. This site is so helpful as far as seeing what has worked & what hasn’t.
