I am wondering why it is so difficult to find Saline Solution

Posted by zscline @zscline, Dec 24, 2023

After calling four different pharmacies in my area and checking with several drug stores, I was told to go to Amazon Prime to obtain the Saline Solution that my pulmonologist prescribed for me to try in my nebulizer. None of the pharmacists seemed to be able to explain why they don't stock it, yet I see that most BE patients, at least in this support group, use it. Just wondering. . . Thanks!

Try Walmart. I have always been able to get it there.

I echo the Amazon recommendation. I got mine there when I couldn’t get it from a pharmacy. .9% and 3% are easily bought.

Pharma Caribe in Punta Gorda Florida ships it. Also I was able to find it by calling a Walgreens about 40 miles away from me but not at my local Walgreens. They have different distributors. Walgreens also ships free by fedex if not too far away. You can use good RX coupons at Walgreens but not at Pharma Caribe or Amazon so the price is higher. Nobody local to me could get it but distant pharmacies could. Call further away maybe in a town with a big hospital.

I was finding it impossible to find it at chain pharmacies but i found a hospital pharmacy that carries it. (Not covered for home use - though covered for in hospital use). And I hope you don’t mind I’d like to piggyback on Zscline’s question and find out if anyone has had any luck taking a year’s worth of receipts for this out-of-pocket prescription expense and submitting it to traditional Medicare part B under their durable equipment and supplies category for reimbursement?

I've always been able to get it from Walgreens, with a prescription. I use a GoodRx coupon and get a 90 day supply, which has always been reasonably priced. I think CVS also either has it or can order it. Good luck! Donna T

My local Walgreens doesn't carry it and the person I spoke with didn't volunteer to look into ordering it for me, so maybe it depends on the store or who you talk to. A couple of other people also mentioned Walgreen's. Thank you for the suggestion. Meanwhile, I am doing okay getting it through Amazon Prime (thankfully!).

Interesting question regarding submitting a year's worth of receipts for the saline solution. My husband says that if you have a doctor's prescription for something like the saline solution, you should be able to submit the receipts. I suppose you also attach a copy of the prescription note from your doctor.

I wonder if this is a regional shortage? I am in the Northeast and have had no problem filling the prescription at the local CVS. Would they also do that my mail? Good luck!

Interesting. I'm in the Pacific Northwest - the other corner of the country. I've heard of CVC and think they are out here. Just not right near me. I will look them up though. Thanks!
