@johnbluffside There are people like me who have tried everything when feeling anxious and depressed. I walk, practice mindfulness, eat a healthy diet, do yoga, lift weights and continue to feel anxious and depressed. I have struggled with anxiety and depression most of my life. I take duloxetine (Cymbalta) and it’s been very helpful for me. Not everyone can treat depression and anxiety with exercise, diet, and therapy. The research literature is very clear that exercise is helpful for mild depression. When a person is in the moderate-severe range of depression and anxiety they need to work with their doctor and this can include prescribed medications.

I know of people who have died from mixing large doses of benzodiazepines (Xanax, for instance) with alcohol because the combination of the two substances depresses respiratory function. I know that mixing antidepressants like Lexapro with alcohol can increase the mental health symptoms of why a person was prescribed Lexapro, including more anxiety, depression, and thoughts of suicide. Whether a person can have an occasional glass of alcohol while prescribed antidepressants is something that should be discussed with the prescribing doctor since it’s very complicated.
