Adding Prozac to Buproprion?

Posted by lalyfa @lalyfa, Jul 12, 2018

I started taking 150 mg bupropion a couple months ago. After a couple weeks I noticed an improvement and was pleased with it. Then after about a month-6 weeks it seemed to stop working (don’t really understand why) so my doctor increased to 300 mg/day. It’s been 10 days since I started the increase and haven’t noticed any change (doctor thought I’d notice an improvement after a week). She mentioned the possibility of adding another anti-depressant such as low dose Prozac. I’m wondering if anyone is taking Bupropion and Prozac (or another med) and is it helping?

Hello, Lalyfa, To answer your question, yes, Bupropion XL and Fluoxetine were a good combo for me. But first some backstory on Bupropion XL. I’m highly sensitive to some formulations of Bupropion XL by different manufacturers. I’m aware they are the same drug; however, I’ve been told that formulations of Bupropion XL by different manufacturers can deliver the medication to a person’s system differently, potentially resulting in mood changes.

For several years, I took 300 mg Bupropion XL daily, and 10 mg Fluoxetine every other day. (every other day on the Fluoxetine to minimize sexual side effects). This combination worked well at relieving my depression. However, the pharmacy I was using recently started stocking Bupropion XL from a different manufacturer, claiming they could no longer stock the medication I had taken for years, so my only choice at that point was to accept what the pharmacy gave me.

About ten days into taking this ‘new formulation’ of Bupropion XL, I started getting irritable and cranky. I discussed this with my Doctor, who lowered my dosage to 150 mg, and I switched pharmacies. Now, the irritability is gone, but my spirits are low and I feel almost no motivation.

A few days ago, the old pharmacy informed me they are again stocking the Bupropion XL 300 mg by the manufacturer I had taken for years. They are setting it aside for me. I see my Dr. in a week, and plan to ask her to increase my dosage back to 300 mg at the old pharmacy to get my mood back to where I used to be. I hope this works.

Finding the right combination can take time. I was fortunate to have a doctor willing to work with me to find what was right for me. As long as my medication works, I’m not interested in trying anything new.

I’ve taken just Prozac for at least 20+ years, finally hitting the maximum 60 mg day dose. Doctor wanted me to try another but I was afraid because I’d never had side effects with Prozac. I tapered off Prozac on my own which angered my doctor but in the long run I have been on one 300 mg tab and one 150 mg tab for over a month and feel better than on Prozac alone. There is talk of introducing Prozac again, but now I feel 60 mg was weighing me down after a point. No longer was I happy. At 76 it was scary to make the change. And I’m not sure but the combination of Wellbutrin and increasing my testosterone (it was a low 7) has really given me my libido back. I read that Wellbutrin has fewer issues with libido as well.

I hope this helps. I really don’t want to be on two antidepressants.

Love,
Sharon
