Prostate and Bladder Issues: What to do?

Posted by ch665296f @ch665296f, Apr 19, 2016

I am a 68, nearly 69, year old man that has had bladder issues for years. I had green light prostate surgery 8 yrs. ago which helped for a while. Now, my prostate has had some regrowth and I have developed several bladder diverticulum. I have had just about every bladder test possible. I also have some incontinence issues, and manage by wearing diapers when necessary. I'm ok with that. My urologist had me on a combination of tamsulosin and finastride, but have not realized much of a difference. I'm a bit afraid of some of those drugs because I have read that they could mask the development of a more serious prostate cancer.

My urologist suggests that I may be a candidate for surgery, but what kind? Turp or total removal of the prostate? I have also read that turp sometimes needs to be repeated. Don't want that to happen either. What to do?

I don't remember if I asked you before. Did you wear a leg bag during the day, or did you have a tap / valve that you'd pee through during the day and use a collection bag during sleep?

I had the Foley 24/7. Drain into leg bag, and then I would empty the bag by turning the valve. Once a month, trip to Urologist for replacement of Bag and piping, etc.

That's what I was wondering. I only use a leg bag when they give me antibiotics, which has been seldom lately. I have a Foley 24/7 without a leg bag and go when I feel the urge. They change it for a new one every two months. I only hook up to a bag at night. I might try stopping this too for a night to see what happens. One night I woke the hell up and felt kind of weird. I dozed off to sleep without opening the valve. So nothing was going out. Maybe that's a good sign? I don't know, but I wanna be kind to my kidneys.
So you were not controlling anything for 18 months. I wonder why they didn't have you go without a leg bag. You only had BPH, right? So the Foley helps you pee when you feel the urge.
I hope your symptoms calm and you regain control to feel confident. Please keep me / us informed. What you're explaining is making more sense to this puzzle. Although, I won't dismiss nervous or overactive bladder. I was "pee shy" and had painful urges from out of nowhere. I also had cystitis and that was no fun, it made it worse. Stay in touch!

Will do.....weaning off a FOley, seems similar to weening any addition......smoking, drinking, etc. And a lot is phycological.....I hear water running I have to urinate. I think my urologist was pretty stubborn and did not want to give up moving on to Hotep. Once I got the hotep, it was great urine flow, just have to control. At night I am awakened and go urinate...it's when I am out and about town, that causes me to first find a restroom then shop?

That's a great example- the water running!
I have a collection of 8 liter plastic water bottles. I plan to keep one near the bed and pee in that by rolling over on my side. I did this before when I had the cystitis that would wake me up every 20 minutes to pee. I used the bottle so I didn't have to get out of bed to run to the bathroom and wake myself up more.
You have confidence to go out and shop. We all have to at some point. I'll buy pads & padded underwear.

My sudden urinary urgency has been a challenge, but since I started having Botox injections in my bladder every 3-4 months, it's pretty much under control. I'm glad that I live in the country, so when I get close to home and it hits, I don't have to wait to get in the house. I bail in a hurry sometimes, especially if I've had lunch and then face the 30 minute drive home. Myrbetric worked for a while, sort of, but Botox really helps.

The plastic urinals you get in the hospital work great at home. They have a cover to keep it closed and not smelling. Works great even laying in bed. I have them all over. Car and rooms. Sometimes when going to the clinic for a long day I have one in a ziploc and in my backpack.

Absolutely! I remember using one in the hospital. They're bent, so that it's easier to pee into. I'm glad you reminded me, thank you. Better than "hoisting" a larger bottle. I will have a cap on the bottle, I was thinking volume more that "ease." I'll invest in one, or bring one if they provide it to me.

I’m 77 with BPH. I used a bottle overnight while lying in bed for years and always awoke to pee 4 or 5 times. Then, I realized that gravity will further empty my bladder while standing up. So now I’m up only 2 or 3 times, even though I get up and walk down the hallway to our toilet. The bottle idea is great for urgency emergencies, like pulling over in urban areas to use in the car, but not so good for overnight, in my experience.

The bottle idea is for post prostatectomy surgery incontinence. I don't want to literally get out of bed and run. I'm the type that rarely gets back to sleep, hence the bottle. Roll & go.

I was diagnosed today with a large cancer in my bladder and will be scheduled for contrast dye CT scan for kidneys and a surgery to remove the tumor.

I'm new here and not sure where to begin on discussions.
It would be good to have you to communicate with.
