Continued success with post-Covid GI (GERD and more) issues

Posted by jimgallatin2 @jimgallatin2, Nov 13, 2023

I wanted to followup on a prior post about my success in addressing post-Covid GI issues, largely abdominal pain, GERD-like symptoms, and changes in stool. For a month I have been taking Famotidine when I wake up and Famotidine and Nortritptyline when I go to bed. I (try to) limit snacking two hours before going to sleep. All I am now experiencing is mild GERD - coughing when I lie down to sleep and take a very deep breath.

I am able to regularly workout and eat a careful diet of lean protein and salads to keep my weight down.

My tinnitus and headaches remain annoying but this is so much better. Fingers crossed.

Bless you! Praying all of this gets better for you from this nasty old Covid. My husband and I just had it for a 2nd time....UGH! It wasn't as bad as the first round of it. Hang in there!

I was just diagnosed with GERD and mild asthma, symptoms which started post covid pneumonia. I have only had coughing and phlegm after eating or drinking, not lying down or taking deep breath. Doctor showed me on CT scan evidence for GERD (opening in esophagus). Have you gotten better. What I've read GERD doesn't go away

I have gotten much better using Famtodine twice a day and Nortriptyline in the evening before bed.

I just got burning in my throat during the night for the first time ever! My doctor prescribed Famtodine and it helps, but only if I avoid certain foods and eating at night. Are you able to still drink coffee? I gave it up due to fear it would aggravate it.

I was diagnosed with GERD 14 years ago from an illeoscopy biopsy. Results were inflammation and irregular Z line (esophagus was no longer round). They recommended proton-pump inhibitors but I instead didn't eat within 2 hours of bedtime and went gluten free (celiac). GERD and skin rashes went away after about 6 mo and haven't returned. The GI was a bit shocked 5 years later with a normal GI scope and no meds. You might consider keeping a food log to see if there are any foods that are inflammatory for you. Another is to try FODMAP, which is giving up almost everything but tepid water and then working your way back. Having celiac, I read all ingredients because nasty gluten bits can be lurking and the GF limit is 20 parts per million. GERD is nasty; I have a friend that has been on the purple pill for years and has malabsorption/osteoporosis (we're old, and the pills impact absorption of nutrients by the GI tract). Make sure your calcium, D, and other bloodwork are good.

@kayeabbott,
Thanks for that info. Great news about your recovery! That’s awesome! Hope I can recover.

I just tested negative for celiac. I’ve had a lot of labs lately, as I’ve had multiple issues going on. Most labs are ok.

I’ve eliminated the culprit I think. I’ve been on Metamucil (orange flavored) for a year. Should have know that citric acid was bad. I’ve never had an acid issue before. They should warn people of it.

I’m treating constipation, so….hard to find plain, unflavored. Not easy. Either has sugar or aspartame. Ughhhh…

I’ve recently lost a lot of weight on purpose with a tight diet and exercise. So, I already have hardly anything in my diet except nutritious food. I’ll do whatever I have to get rid of this stuff.

The active ingredient in Metamucil is psillium husks, which can be added to foods and is much cheaper than using the brand. Some folk use ground flax seed as well. Both are high in insoluble and soluable fiber (take with lots of water).

I’ve looked into that, but what about the way it has of jelling up? Isn’t that another ingredient? That jell feature seems helpful with my constipation.

REPLY

The jelling ingredient is water; it is absorbed by the hydrophyllic psyllium husk. It is an easy test, put a TBSP or more of powdered or whole psyllium husk in a pyrex measuring cup, add water, and stir. Then add more water as that is absorbed. The result will be a translucent gel. That is also why people need to drink a lot of water if they are taking psyillium husk. Ground flax seed works for constipation mostly by adding fiber (whole seeds aren't completely digested so don't help as much).

Oh, I see. Thanks. I hope my new formula will suffice then. I have a prescription for a pill for constipation, but from what I’ve read I need plenty of time at home when I take it. Will be glad to get this matter sorted.

I was responsible with my Thanksgiving food yesterday and had another burn free night sleeping!
