Post hip replacement problems

Posted by hipgranny1956 @hipgranny1956, Jun 20, 2023

I had hip replacement 6 days ago and the first two days went according to everything I was told but on the third day I tried to walk around and I had excruciating pain in my lower leg down the tibia or shin bone and my knee and the side of my knee was horrible burning pressure tingling just a deep deep ache. I kept trying to walk but it would make me cry out. Went back to orthopedics they did an x-ray and there was no fracture. But they really don't know what's wrong he put me on gabapentin for possible nerve damage somewhere and this is my first day taking it I'm not feeling great on it in fact I feel like I couldn't even get up and try to walk for feeling a little unstable. I just wondered if anyone else had that problem and did it resolve on its own or did they find the right solution? I go back next week for my first visit and I'm praying for some progress as I take these pills and get through the next days of hopefully being a little active.

Thank you, Sue,
I did discuss with PT yesterday. He did not seem concerned. He felt that I had worked out the new hip pretty strenuously while out of town. Basically, a wait and see approach. So, that is what I'm doing.

Hi again,

I’ll wait a week for the gym. That will be the end of my PT prescription.

Most likely just one set of squats with an empty bar, 3 sets of bench presses, and 3 sets of barbell rows with 10 lbs loaded.

It’s been 7 mos since I’ve worked out.

Hi all,

Didn’t go to the gym this week. Still low energy and not sleeping well, most likely thinking about this listing I’m working on.

We will attempt return next week.

Hi I had my left hip replaced 5 months ago and I had the same pain in my knee, as soon as I came round from the surgery I told them my knee is killing me. The nurses didn’t know what was going on but as soon as my surgeon came in he said it’s normal to have pain in the knee due to him hammering the prosthesis into the femur! I was also given gabapentin for nerve pain! It did take at least a month for that pain to start to go away, I had no pain from the hip just the knee! This was my second hip replacement as I had my right hip done in 2019 and didn’t have any issues, hardly any pain and recovered very quickly! This one has a been a bit more challenging!

Hi all!

Had my post op visit yesterday. Here’s what my surgeon said: “Go out and live your life!”

I’m cleared to lift (even squats), XC ski (easy trails), and any other activities that don’t involve impact, like running, basketball or tennis.

I wasn’t doing those anyway. I will pass on golf for now.

Overall, very good news!

And no pain.

Hi all,

Setback.

Not with my hip, but my kidneys. Found out I have stage 3 kidney disease. 30% reduced function.

I’m staying hydrated pending my next set of labs.

A troubling fact: none of the medical providers I’ve seen over the past 3 years mentioned it.

A warning to all—do your own research. Before it’s too late.

Bill

Can anyone who has had a partial hip replacement write in their experience. Thank you.

I had left total hip replacement surgery in March 2023. I have had many problems since then. I developed bursitis in the muscle next to the replacement. I have had one injection for the pain so far. I still have the pain, so will prob receive more injections. I also developed a ruptured disc in S-1. This affects my right leg. As soon as I lie down, the pain in the leg gets worse and often I cry out with it. I don't get much sleep. Yesterday, I went in for an epidural. I was told this would solve the leg pain. I still had the leg pain last night, but it wasn't as severe. Just wondering if it takes a while for the epidural to fully take the leg pain away. I just want my life back!

I'm waiting for THA on the left hip. Years ago I was prescribed Gabapentin and took one pill. I told my doctor Gabapentin wasn't for me, and he prescribed Lyrica which I did tolerate. Fast forward 10 years to today and I'm not on any nerve pain medication I think because I left my job where I sat 9 hours a day, and moved from a home where I had to climb stairs to a one story house. 3 days might be too soon to know if it's really a long term nerve pain problem for ya. I feel for you and I'm glad you have no fracture. I hope your new hip brings you years of good movement once your healing gets further along.

itnoc,
Do you feel the Lyrica helps you? I’ve been on it a few years for fibromyalgia. I think it helps, but not sure.
Was thinking of weaning off of it.

It helped when I took it, but I got off of it after a couple of years because I gained 17 pounds on it, and it was expensive. I'm now on Medicare so not sure if I would have to pay for. The BIG reason I got off of it though was because I had a high stress job at a department of defense missile contractor and Lyrica made me loopy big time and I needed to be sharp to accomplish my tasks, and perform at high level meetings.

Long time since my last post.

Got back into the gym in January, lifting weights (squatting with the empty bar). Now I squat 200 lbs for 3 sets of 5 reps.

No pain, full range of motion in my THR. I encourage Anyone recovering from joint replacement surgery to include weight training in their recovery. I’m now 71.
