CAT SCAN - how often?
When you were first diagnosed, did you need another cat scan before starting the antibiotics? I had a cat scan done last July prior to the formal diagnosis, and now they want another cat scan prior to antibiotics. Was that your experience? It seems so soon esp. since MAC is slow growing. Thanks

I've just looked up NAC and I'm definitely going to try it! What dose would you recommend?
It says between 600mg - 1800mg so quite a range!
Neither of these gives quick results like a hit of albuterol.
Both need to be in your system, accompanied by plenty of water, to thin mucus. So by taking them twice daily it doesn't make any difference when you do it in relation to airway clearance.
Have you tried either one yet?
Sue
No, it wasn't a regular part of the protocol back in 2018-9. Now it is considered if you have not converted to MAC negative after 6-9 months of the Big³.
Sue
Thank you
I've tried NAC but wasn't sure when to take it so have been taking it morning and evening for about 2 weeks. I can't say Ive noticed a change but maybe it's gradual. I'll keep taking it. I haven't tried Mucinex yet but it looks like a lot of people use it. Thanks for your help!
Sueinmn, Mentor,
It was terrific to see in your post your condition has improved greatly over the last year, I always read your posts very carefully and have learned so much from you and others in our community. I hope I can follow in your footsteps.
Once I started Airway Clearance and nebbing 3 % Saline in the fall of 2022, the constant, chronic cough eventually disappeared.
I have had two negative cultures for the MAC which was diagnosed in June, 2022, and have been on the Big 3 since Sep, 2023 and after just two months on Arikayce which I started in July, 2023 of this year I am on a path to clear the MAC. My chief complaint is that my breathing capacity has declined and my Pulmonary Team and ID Doc are not able to pinpoint since I have so much going on...COPD/Empha(severe), BE and the MAC. Decided to invest time and energy into Respir. Therapy as you did and waiting to see the results over time. I've had 6 sessions of mild exercise routines.
I'm hoping to at least pinpoint why my shortness of breath seems to be declining and learn more about what I need to. Thanks again for all that you do for our community.

Have you had a recent echo cardiogram? I had really bad shortness of breath and it turned out part of the reason was myocarditis...inflamed heart muscle leading to temporary heart failure.
Flo - I am happy to hear that you are not letting the multiple conditions discourage you from trying to reach your personal best.
In addition to the airway clearance, I find it very helpful to do some separate deep breathing or relaxation breathing several times a day. Two particular times are when I sit at my desk to use the computer, and the last thing at night in bed before I sleep.
What kind of exercise are you able to do? Even mild movement like walking can help gently maintain or improve your ability to breathe.
Sue
sue, I do ACT twice a day. My sputum has become less in the last couple of days, Is it a good thing? I'm tired most of the day and feeling sleepy after doing ACT, deep breathing.
Yes, it is normal to feel tired after ACT - it is hard work.
Since you have so many lung conditions, how are you monitoring your oxygen levels?
