Posted by jenhaz @jenhaz, Oct 16, 2023

My husband has been diagnosed with cirrhosis his father had this as well and there is suspect that this is hereditary. Im watching my husband go through what my father in law did and sadly he past at age 67 he was not eligible for a transplant for reasons we never found out! Now my husband has ascities and a kidney infection hoping someone can send some food information and hope!

2nd reply. Rosemary, did you have nausea and vomiting at this stage of being evaluated? Husband vomits once or twice a day. He thinks it’s trigger by lactose and the lose of taste. He also thinks Compaize is a trigger. I’m obviously concerned about him loosing the Lactulose and other meds with his vomiting. Who would I speak with about? They hepatologist staff that’s been monitoring him up to this point just seems to ignore me if they don’t have an answer. So frustrating.

@leonardg, Good morning, K. One thing that I learned from my doctors throughout my entire liver journey is that each one of us, with a liver disease, can expect all, some, or none of the ugly side effects. And it can happen at varying times of our journey. So, to answer your question, I will say that I did experiencing some nausea and vomiting. You are allowed to be concerned, you are his wife and caregiver. I expect that your husband will learn more about his condition and possible interventions as a result of this appointment. That would be a great time to ask questions, but be prepared and open to hearing that some of these issues are 'normal' in patients with cirrhosis.
Is your husband feeling well enough to communicate these concerns with his care team?

My husband couldn't use the lactulose either. For some reason enulose, same active ingredients worked. He would mix it with a little water and lemon juice. It was still a difficult situation and I could tell when he needed more. It was a very scary time.
He received a transplant at the Mayo Phoenix last January. It has not been completely smooth sailing but we are grateful for every day and the support we continue to receive from them.
