Anyone participate in SilverSneakers?

Posted by Scott R L @scottrl, Oct 3, 2023

When I became disabled, I got a Medicare Advantage plan that came with a SilverSneakers membership.

I've found the online classes very helpful. For one thing, they give me "someplace to go" without leaving my house.

I got so involved, they interviewed me back in April as part of their "SilverSneakers Live" series.

(Great face for radio, right?)

Anyway, does anyone else participate?

Just attended a class today! It's a good counterpoint to my more rigorous training on alternate days.

During the pandemic lockdown, my YMCA where I go for Silver Sneakers benefits sent many videos to me and I still use them. They are all geared for older adults and I can do them at home when I wish. I am trying to do these exercises consistently. They do help. Yay Silver Sneakers and all who did the videos! With all good wishes, @joybringer1

I go for chair yoga. Stretching, breathing, a few poses. Then balance, relaxation and a short tai chi. I'm not too good about doing the you tube channel but I do watch them. It's just easier to have a class time and get out of the house. I am so glad we have this available.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan and silver sneakers or some other plan similar and are not using it you are losing out. You may also with silver sneakers be a member of more than one gym. I have nothing but good things too say about SilverSneakers having and a member for several years. It cost absolutely nothing and is included in your plan. I have not used the online programs but I know they are good after having looked at them, because I frequent gyms in person. It's easy, just go to the gym present your card and the whole process takes only a few minutes.

I completely agree. At one point I was a member (free) of four gyms because each one had something I loved that the others didn’t have. I’ve been doing yoga for 10 years at one club and I do resistance training at another. I also participate in GO365 through Humana Gold, but I’m told that many other Advantage plans have the same or similar. It receives the number of daily steps from my Fitbit and when you go to the gym, also keeps track of immunizations, mammograms, bone density scans, annual doctor visits, etc. you get gift cards at the end of the year for doing this stuff. Each activity is worth points. I usually get over $300. Last year I got it in Lowes gift cards because I was moving into a new house. You are required to do 5,000 steps a day to get points for that day. It motivates me. You still get points for any of the other things you do even if you don’t do the steps or for the days that you do. It’s not strict.

Glad to help!
I think the online classes are great.
For me, the best part is that nobody can see me. Having had a stroke, I'm very self-conscious about how I look when trying to move.
Have fun!

P.S. Cool jack-o-lantern pic.

One does not need a Medicare Advantage plan to have Silver Sneakers. My traditional Medicare medigap plan includes it so I can go anywhere that accepts Silver Sneakers and of course participate in online classes. And with traditional Medicare I can self-refer to any doctor that accepts Medicare anywhere in the US ...so if I want to go to another gym while I am in Florida I can do that too.
