Melatonin side effects

Posted by hipcheck @hipcheck, Sep 30, 2023

I have been taking one, five milagram Melatonin supplement gummie every night for a little over a year believing that it was safe but maybe I was wrong. Recently I began experiencing some concerning health problems that are apparently known side effects of long term Melatonin use and would like to know if anyone else has had this experience and if their symptoms went away after discontinued use. I've stopped taking the supplement several days ago but I am still experiencing, nausea, dizziness, difficulty eating-getting food down, fatigue, lethargy, joint pain, feeling warm-hot flashes without fever, night sweats and probably some others I'm forgetting. I will be contacting my Doctor next week but any help would be valuable and appreciated. Thank you.

I just bought Starbucks cold brew last night to try it. It comes already prepared in a bottle or a box. I drank a cup before bed and no headache during the night. I'm almost afraid to say it out loud in case of jinxing it. Will try it again tonight. Going away next weekend. Driving from Northern California to Oregon and if this works it will be a miracle. Thank you so much for the suggestion. Stomach not hurting either.

I have been taking 10 mg. For a long time at least 5-6 years. I do not have any side effects from Melatonin. I do am frequently going to bathroom in the night. ( now a days 5-6 times) That is because of OAB, I assume.

When I suggested cold brew it was because it seems to be better on the digestive track, but I only drink one cup in the morning. I don't drink it at night. It would keep me up. Periodically, I will take ambien but I have 5 mg pills that I break in half. Also, periodically, I will take up to 3 mg of melatonin. Fortunately, most of the time I sleep okay and don't need something.

I have something called Hypnic headache. It's rather rare and mostly affects older women. I have been waking up for the last 16 years or so during REM sleep with an awful headache. They don't know much about it except that caffeine and or melatonin help. If I drink coffee it does help but I also have gastritis and IBS-d and the coffee is killing my GI tract. Also suggest melatonin but even if I take just 3 mg. it feels like my head exploded. Why does melatonin affect me that way? Everybody seems to tolerate it well.

I used to take a half of a Benadryl for a sleep aid which no longer worked. SO, my provider recommended Melatonin 5 mg. Headaches, and very upsetting dreams. I have ruled out literally everything else from diet to other meds (which are few). Post menopausal. Back on half a Benadryl a few times a week.
