I'm sorry you are going through this. I too have anxiety and panic disorder but am trying to manage without medication and with therapy. It is pretty common for SSRI's to make someone feel worse before they feel better. I was on Celexa once and it took me probably a good month for the side effects to decrease. It made me feel better eventually for years but then decided to stop. I think about getting back on but so hard to handle the side effects when you have a full-time job and have to live your life. Hang in there- it does get better.
@starla - been there! Not all anti anxiety medications work the same way on everyone. For instance, Xanax made me feel more anxious and actually caused panic attacks. Ativan did help, but took several minutes to kick in.
If the Citalopram is not working for you, ask the doctor to prescribe something else.
I eventually found deep belly breathing to be the most helpful, during a panic attack and before the panic. Focus on deep breathing. And as you deep breathe keep telling yourself it will pass. Once deep belly breathing becomes natural to you, you will not suffer those panic attacks.
Anxiety, however, is another animal which needs mind control. If you let anxiety get out of control it will trigger your panic attacks because one leads to the other and it becomes a vicious cycle.
Yes, I have extreme panic attacks. I shake all over also have frequent panic attack black outs where I pass out. It's horrible you are having so much trouble with an iety. My anxiety pops up so much that I don't leave the house for fear I'll pass out and fall. I take my anxiety medicine at bedtime so I can sleep. I take Buspirone twice a day. One during the day too. Hope you find the help you need soon.
@starla. I’ve had panic attacks. I’ve also had anxiety most of my life. It took me awhile working with my doctor to find a medication and a dosage that worked for me. When I first had panic attacks I didn’t know any skills such as mindfulness practices and breathing. Now that I have these in my tool box and practice them regularly I find I can help the panic and anxiety decrease. It’s a skill that uses your body and your nervous system to help to calm your mind.
Do you have a mental health therapist you’re working with?
I am also experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. The truth is many people do. Deep breathing, exercising,no caffeine and medication are all good tools.
I hope you have good and understanding doctor who will help you.
This is wonderful platform and you can ask all your questions and you will find support here
I get an upset stomach, diarrhea, heart palpitations, crying spell, I can't sit still, tremors, and I cannot concentrate. I am seeing a psychiatrist next month cuz it is affecting my life too much now. I do not know what to do. Social workers do not help. I hope you can find some relief. I do take Newton Laboratories Nervousness/Anxiety tincture and Life Seasons Mood Stability with food, easier on the stomach and it does help. I also take Stress Mints. Peppermint oil tincture has been a blessing for my upset stomach and diarrhea part of the panic attack.
It is very hard experience. No question about it. I am glad you will see psychiatrist. Maybe new meds will help you.
I know your pain. Let’s hope we both find some peace. Please write anytime
