Pain And Changes In Weather...Am I Alone????

Posted by cahnny @cahnny, Sep 10, 2016

I've read articles saying that changes in weather can effect severity of pain and, of course, there's the old timers who swear the old bones ache when it's gonna rain. Well I guess, at 70 years old, I'm now an old timer and, let me tell you...my old bones and muscles, and skin, and hair HURT. There are days I hurt from neuropathy and Morton's Neuroma in my feet and legs, to profound itching along my degenerating spine (I think due to pinches nerves), to aching joints, swollen cysts behind my arthritic knees, gut discomfort from IBS, pinched nerves EVERYWHERE to neck pain that goes down my arms, to skin that just feels sore and tingly. I'm talking all these things all at the same time. It's like someone flipped a switch and lit me up like a roman candle. One doctor will say...that could very well be. Another doctor will say poppy cock. Well poppy cock this...I know my body and I know how it feels and I know it's not in my head. Now it might be coming FROM my head...as in mixed up signals from the brain saying YOU'RE IN PAIN but the pain and sensations are real.

I needed a new bedside alarm clock so purchased a clock that also provides barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity readings. It seems, without fail, on days when there is a dramatic swing in barometric pressure my body goes into all over intense pain mode. Do any of you have the same experiences??? I'm not talking just a little aching. I'm talking REAL discomfort.

My husband is the same way with his NDPH (New Daily Persistent Headache, 24/7 head pain). He can feel a storm coming in 3 - 4 days before the event too. I wish there was something to block the effects of barometric pressure changes.

I am so sorry that is something that is so debilitating. I knew yesterday that it would rain Wednesday and now the weather bureau has changed the forecast to 1 inch of rain in the storms when before it was 20% chance of even a storm. I wish someone would take up the research into this and help those who suffer like your husband. I have zero arthritis only this pain as barometric pressure changes minutely. My son seems to have the same curse, unfortunately, so it seems to be the way we are constructed.

I have a question for you? I am looking all over for a dr. Because I don’t feel healthy all together. I know that I have fibromyalgia, but I don’t remember when I was diagnosed with that pretty sure it was at least 7 or eight years ago, but I’m not sure because I have memory loss. When I was 27 years old, I had an 11-year-old daughter and a two month old son and I had a hormonal brain tumor due to as I remember.
I ended up having multiple strokes on both sides of the brain. So my 11 year old had to re-teach me how to be an adult so I was a baby all over again in my 11 year old had to teach me everything that’s what I remember so being trapped in your brain is not a good feeling, so I know how it feels to be trapped in your brain so I know what it’s like to have strokes. I was legit, trapped in my mind. People were talking to me and I was trying to talk back and I couldn’t in my life basically ended, but started. My life ended as a career woman , a single mom with an 11 year old and a two month old and my life started as a 27 year old mom disabled can’t work anymore for the rest of your life with an 11 year old and a two month year old. My life has been unhealthy ever cents. They had to give me steroids to open up the blood vessels in my brain which caused deterioration of the bones which cause me to end up having hip replacements so both of my hips are replaced and I have chronic back pain to the point that now I even have a back stimulator, and that’s not even helping. I don’t want to take opiates or medical marijuana. And even when I do take them, my pain doesn’t even touch it it’s like I took a TicTac, so what’s the point in taking it? I have always had IBS of constipation and diarrhea so I have never had a normal bowel. So I also have that issue and I’ve had the gastric sleeve and I have rib pain that it’s unexplained and doctors just don’t know what to do. And I just went to my primary doctor for a well check and the doctor told me I’m sorry you’ve been dealing with this for 17 years. I don’t want to touch anything anymore you’re just going to have to go to the mayo clinic and we all know I’m never going to get in there because there is no house anymore or Doogie Howser because nobody wants to search or look into what’s going on or what diseases could be or why am I so sick or do I really have kidney disease or liver disease or what’s going on and girl we’re going to have one heck of a storm today because my kneecap just felt like it was going to shatter. I don’t know where.

Not sure where you live but my son bounced around from doctor to doctor eventually, we found Dr. Dennis Patin, MD University of Miami. He specializes in people who have nowhere else to go as no one wants to put the time in. He may not have all the solutions but he cares and working for Uni Miami they have more leeway than other specialists. Worth a try we had nowhere else to turn and we found ketamine treatment for the pain. Life changing for my son.

I can feel for anyone with this curse. I can predict rain, thunderstorms, and usually the intensity of both 3 to 4 days out from the event. Crazy as it may seem, in most cases, I am more accurate than the weather bureau. The pain is worse in my hands and my legs. I have had this much-hated talent for as long as I can remember. I have tried everything and nothing makes a difference. When traveling, (I have a lot) into say the Amazon I have no issues as the barometric pressure doesn't change much. It is far worse in spring/summer. Funny enough my chiropractor would call me to work out if it would rain so he knew if his son would play sport on that weekend. Regardless of what some so-called experts may say, we know our bodies better than anyone. If anyone finds a solution I would love to know. It is no fun I can assure you. Painkillers are the only management tool to live a normal life at times.

Try living in Fl! After total knee replacement, I can predict a storm hours before. Sharp pain in different part of the knee. But, during IAN I had no pain , that was 16 hours of hell. But at the end of the storm, last 2 hours or so, pain meds and ice. I call my knee the weather gauge. I think many with arthritis have the same issue. But ice, ice, ice. Forget heat for me.

Thats a strong drug but if it works, take it. I may look him up, about a 2 hour easy drive for me. Lee county is worthless. Thank you.

I can say on the nuroma. My pain Mgt made a mistake while I was getting RFA. 4 years ago he was talking his head off. He gave me a burn, injection into the nuroma, but it was to be a RFA. Told him, slapped the pads on, did the RFA. Since then, NO PAIN!!!!! 4 years now. Fought it for 2 years. No shoes worked, I was putting foam rubber padding in, anything to stop the pain. Then came the day he messed up!!!!!! Tell your doc you want both in one day. I swear by it!!!!! Example: knee replacement went bad on left leg so right foot puts a great deal of weight. No pain!!!!

Welcome to Connect @csearch. Just wanted to say hello! I see you've found that you are not alone in your "talents". Cute way to put it. It does stink for sure! I've found out that because of a process called central sensitization the body feels more, kind of like a loud speaker. Here's more about central sensitization from an in depth scientific perspective - in case you are interested...

Knowing the "why behind the what" sometimes helps put the pieces together to better understand but obviously doesn't change the fact that it is what it is. You ask if there are any solutions - unfortunately, only symptom management as you have found out from your own journey. Besides medication, do you find other ways to work through the rise in symptoms during the spring and summer?

I know my pelvic pain increases when the barometer drops. This pain, however, really flares during the full moon. Before this pain developed, I would feel more electric vibrations during this period, but now, the pain is debilitating. Just went through it this past weekend with the Harvest Moon. Do others feel this? I mentioned it to one of my doctors, but no response.

I’m the same. I begin to experience pain in all my joints usually 3 days out from any rain or major change in temperature. I hate to say this, but I’m anticipating bad days ahead as we cool off later this week. Sometimes a heating pad and pain relief gel works well enough, but I often require pain meds. I have lupus and fibromyalgia.

Old fractures tend to get a little tender when the weather changes, as does the metal in my shoulder/pelvic bones/knee when it’s either cold or hot.
The osteoarthritis in other joints gets stiff.
Just like having an internal barometer, I tend to be able to predict weather, I’m guessing in ways similar to others here.
At present though, the only real pain I have is the pain brought about from bowel prep prior to colonoscopy (happening tomorrow), and I would argue there is a level of interruption to one’s day that is rarely surpassed by any other activity…

Great answer, thank you. I think we all seem to feel most doctors dismiss this as an old wives tale, and painkillers are the only real true relief. I think we would all like a cure but alas none is on the horizon. My son has the same talent so he is not impressed I passed it on to him.
