Tired of waking up at 2am..Sonata
Hi, I'm new here. I can't sleep. It's frustrating. I'm 56. I used to sleep 7 or 8 hours a night. Now, I'm lucky to get 3 or 4 hours of sleep. I have no problem falling asleep, but every morning, without fail, I wake up at 2 or 3am and can't go back to sleep. I have mental health diagnosis. I am on 4mg Klonopin for severe anxiety and panic. Psychiatrist had me on Ambien, but after a few months it stopped working. I have BPD, put on 50mg of instant release Seroquel to be taken 31st bedtime. A very sedating medication. That does not help. I can't take herbs due to medication interactions. Remeron, also a sedating medication used to help, but stopped working. I have been on it since 2005. Busphar for anxiety does nothing to help me sleep. Psychiatrist just raised Seroquel dosage to 100mg from 50mg. Have not filled it yet. I don't know where to turn. I don't do anything stimulating before bed, computers, TV, eat, etc. Room is fairly dark. I don't know what to do, I'm exhausted all the time. It's wearing on me. Thinking about Melatonin? Psychiatrist will not prescribe sleeping pills..Sonata, Lunesta. Help..

I will definitely try this and let you know. My daughter mentioned that maybe I needed more salt.
I do something similar with Clonazepam, but it makes me feel drugged the next day and doesn’t always help me sleep very well. Frustrated.
I have done a saliva test also and meeting with my natural path doctor soon to determine what I need. I’ve always said it has to be hormones or lack of when we get older, as sooooo many older folks have sleep issues.
I will post my findings and help. Wish me luck because I am miserable. Not sleeping is affecting my life and ruining it.
Question. What keeps you from going back to sleep?
Question.
What causes you to wake up:
Noise
Pet
Needing to go to the
bathroom
Is your brain going crazy?
No concentration
No focusing
Thinking about things you
have to do/deadlines
Do you wake up, wet due to
sweating?
I wake up two/three times a night due to body pain and/or needing to go to the bathroom.
I take 7.5 mg Remeron between 60-90 minutes before bedtime to help return to sleep after the interruptions. Without it, I struggle to get back to sleep. Also take 3mg melatonin 30-60 min before bedtime to help get to sleep. I wake up tired which may be "hangover" effects of the meds, so I'm experimenting with when to take them.
Note that my colon had been removed due to cancer and have a lot of pain in the shoulders due to arthritic spurring. Left one is recovering from surgery, the right one will get surgery when the left is done with PT. Won't eliminate the pain, but will greatly reduce it.
Forgot that I use a CPAP machine.
It has been many years now that I have been waking up often through the night and then lie awake for 1-2 hours before falling back to sleep. I am 81 now and I suspect this wake/sleep pattern began in my late 40s or mid 50's. When I had to be at work at 8 AM, I was a wreck much of the time... by Friday night I just wanted to sleep the clock around, and I often did.
My sleep issues got worse when I was diagnosed with Graves Disease at age 60. I was so "wonky" that I was put on long term medical layoff. Sleep problems then included nightmares with daytime anxiety and panic attacks. I have been taking Prozac for 25 years now, I seem to wake up before a dream stage starts as I do not seem to dream unless I sleep late... like after 6 AM through 8 AM. At this time my dreams are not nightmares.
I do not snore as I learned to clench my jaws many years ago to prevent the dry mouth that mouth breathing causes. I always sleep on one side or the other. Soon after the radioactive iodine treatment, tinnitus became a problem for me; not real bad but worse at night as it would wake me about 4 -5 AM. After years of this additional problem, I discovered that the tinnitus, in my case, was connected to nighttime chronic low grade sinus congestion. I have learned to keep the tinnitus under control but I still wake up within 2-3 hours after falling asleep. I usually fall to sleep quite easily without active chemicals of any kind, I have never smoked, am careful of wine intake, no coffee or tea or chocolate after mid afternoon, not much TV or evening PCk
At age 81 I have noticed a dramatic drop in my short term memory and in my ability to make decisions. However I am an avid consumer of print material - usually of a non-trivial in nature though not academic. I keep wondering if melatonin might help me get a better quality of sleep. I had used it years ago but with the ..addition of Prozac, I stopped .
NOTE : I have not found MDs to be interested in my sleep issues or the tinnitus in the past; but now with struggling to find well known words and being able to neglect good habits through indifference, also getting so involved in my reading that I often have to think about where I am and what day it is. This is beginning to concern me; thusI realize I should find some help to slow down the memory loss if possible. There is a catch here : in two weeks I will be moving from the east coast to the west coast facing the prospect of finding and engaging with a new GP. I am otherwise very healthy: low normal blood pressure all my life, good diet habits, gh IQ, never over-weight or skinny. fairly active though no exercise routine.ho
Same issues prior. three years past. Fired my Psychiatrist. He had me to the point of a new feeling. SUICIDE. Worked with an highly educated long term CNP< MP< with Doctorate that saved me. Of course some changes and some add ons. within a two period the Suicide thoughts completely gone. Sure it does take time and even med combo's and possible more expensive med's. Worth my life and my former self. For sure.
