Asteroid hyalosis and vitrectomy
Hello,
I have asteroid hyalosis which apparently is hundreds of small asteroid-like floaters in one eye. Recently it became worse, and my ophthalmologist can't actually see my retina because of them. It's very distracting especially when driving. I'm going to see a retina specialist in two days and I think he will be recommending a vitrectomy. My ophthalmologist thinks so too. Has anyone here had a vitrectomy because the retina is too covered with "asteroids" for the doctor to even view it?

I too have asteroid hyalosis and dense floaters in one eye, the one for which I had cataract removal. I have been scheduled for a vitrectomy and I am scared to death. I would like to hear from anyone who has had this surgery and hear their experiences.

1 ReactionI did have the vitrectomy and it's been a miracle. Truly. I recommend it and even though it was scary, after a few days and especially after a week I was so thrilled with my vision. I hope you have the same experience!

3 ReactionsThank you so much for your review of your experience. I think I bounce back and forth in my thinking about every 15 minutes. I have great trust in my retinal surgeon -- He practices and teaches in NYC but comes to our area a couple of times a month for consults and surgery. I just can't see myself spending the rest of my life with this vision impairment.
Exactly! Once I realized that it was actually getting worse over the previous 3 years, I decided I can't just give up and accept it for the rest of my life especially if there was an option to do something about it!

2 ReactionsGood morning Suzemn. I had the vitrectomy on this past Thursday. I am deeming it a TOTAL success. Had a follow up visit yesterday and the doc has agreed. All went well. I am being religious about using the eye drops and keeping my head above my waist as bending over places too much pressure in the eyes and can cause a detached retina. I vacillated about having this surgery. Your report of a positive outcome gave me the courage to proceed. I want you to know how much I appreciate that you took the time to tell me of your experience. Best wishes for good health and a happy life.
