Chronic Nausea: What solutions have you found?

Posted by clutch @clutch, Apr 30, 2021

I am new to this group. I have chronic nausea without any further diagnosis as to cause. More recently, the nausea is harder to control and I have developed
difficulty swallowing. I was turned down by Mayo Clinic when I self-referred. My question is: Has any member(s) in the group been evaluated by Mayo for the same or similar problems? If so, what was your outcome?
Any and all responses are welcomed and very much appreciated.

It could be related to reflux

Just a quick tip. I have some digestive issues that come with nausea and I have used these Ginger Chews. They are like little candies individually wrapped. They help my nausea immediately and then for a little while after. Maybe they will help you too. I bought mine at Marshalls but you can find them many places.

@shelahsegal, meant to ask specifically: Have you changed any of your recent medication? That is, types, dosages , etc.?

Thanks for your interest @clutch!
I don't take any prescription meds, but have used several supplements for many years to help with osteoporosis and arthritis mostly.
On the advice of my GP, I cut out all of them to see if my nausea abated. It didn't, but I did discover that I no longer needed some of them so in the end, I'm saving a good bit of money, LOL!
As I mentioned in response to Justin, I did try DIgest Gold but it actually caused more stomach upset. I do occasionally take a Gin Gins hard candy. It occasionally helps ever so slightly, but it isn't reliable or very effective.
Regarding triggers, I have learned to avoid foods higher in fat and fiber as those definitely increase the level of nausea. But avoiding them has not eradicated the nausea and I can still have some pretty difficult times.
I appreciate your questions and welcome your thoughts.

I have been experiencing daily nausea, made worse after each meal or snack, for 6 months now. I lost about 10 pounds that I couldn't afford to lose at the onset and have only been able to regain 2 pounds since.
I have had blood work, abdominal CT scans, endoscopy and a gastric emptying study. All negative/no remarkable outcome.
It started around the time I had a major arthritic flare in my thumb which brought me to a rheumatologist, whose tests led to a diagnosis of Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (autoimmune).
Even though gastroparesis has been ruled out, I have been eating low fat, low fiber because otherwise the nausea is much worse.
I am hoping that somebody here can offer some "outside-the-box" thinking because all my doctors are pretty much stumped. They are compassionate but have effectively diagnosed this as "We don't know. Do your best" 🙂
I am not able to tolerate anti-nausea medications as they cause severe constipation and migraine attacks.
I am hoping more for some thoughts on possible causes.

I have had daily nausea for a year now. I have GERD too but I don’t think it’s related.
Upper endoscopy also normal. Will have gastric emptying testy I had the test before/ normal.
I understand what you say about rx drug-I assume it is Zofran. It works well but causes severe constipation.
Lately I take Bonine for milder nausea. I also have rx Promethazine that works fairly well. Chewing ginger candy takes the edge off to.
I eat different now- some of the foods I used to love before makes me nauseous just thinking about it.
I don’t have any magic cure but you could try the meds I mentioned.

I had chronic nausea for a while and Promethazine helped for sure. Eventually I found the right GI doctor who diagnosed SIBO and then a round of Xiafaxin and going to a strict FODMAP diet helped calm down the nausea. The SIBO hasn't really gone away but that and my nausea is much better with the diet as continuing to watch what I eat.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am sorry to hear that you are continuing to deal with such difficult symptoms.
Yes, Zofran was the culprit. I was worried about trying Promethazine because the most common side effects are sedation, confusion and even constipation. I assume that you haven't had those issues, which is great, but I'd be nervous to try it.
I will look into Bonine. My doctor never mentioned it.
Thanks again for your interest and suggestions!

Hello, I suffered with nausea for four years after having a Colectomy, colon surgery. I did not vomit ...just felt Yucky all day. Finally, my young Gastroenterologist prescribed Nortriptyline 25mg capsule...take one at night. I have now been free of daily nausea for a year. You may ask your doctor about this.

It’s so encouraging to hear that you were able to find a solution!
I will definitely look into that medication.
Are you able to eat a normal diet now?

Yes, I am able to eat what I consider a normal diet for me...which is poultry, fish, most vegetables and fruits. I stay away from sugars, processed, and spicy foods.
I take Marilax daily to avoid constipation.
Also, the Nortriptyline advises not to drink alcoholic beverages while taking this medication.
I gladly gave up my nightly glass of wine so as not to feel nauseated all day.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
